This open access volume identifies the common and specific aspects of social mechanisms that generate inequalities, through comparative analyses of different dimensions in which inequalities are expressed. It includes studies on social inequalities in 5 European and 5 Latin American countries, along 11 thematic axes: inequalities in the labour market and labour trajectories; asymmetries in the relationship between training and employment; inequalities in work and family life; educational inequalities; geographical and social inequalities: ethnicity and language; social inequalities, migration and space; uncertainty, strategies, resources and capabilities; inequality of opportunity: intergenerational social mobility; social policies; gender inequalities; and research methodology. This volume is the result of a large collaborative project on social inequality funded by the European Commission: the International Network for Comparative Analysis of Social Inequalities. Taking into account diverse perspectives and approximations, the collaborators have created a general analytical framework as a model of analysis of social inequalities. The various contributions in this volume help readers gain a global outlook and help reflect on social inequalities in a comparative perspective. The Welfare State and Life Transitions uses the lens of key life stages to highlight changes in these transitions and in available resources for citizen support within nine European welfare states. This timely book reveals that new life courses are found to require more, and not less welfare support, but only Sweden has developed an active life course approach and only three more could be considered supportive, in at least some life stages. For the remainder, policies were at best limited or, in Italy.s case, passive. The contributors reveal that the neglect of changing needs is leading to greater reliance on the family and the labour market, just as these support structures are becoming more unpredictable and moreunequal. They argue that alongside these new class inequalities, new forms of intergenerational inequality are also emerging, particularly in pension provision.

La educación superior en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) ha experimentado un extraordinario crecimiento con la llegada del nuevo milenio, pero la matrícula en programas de ciclo corto (PCC) sigue siendo relativamente baja. Los PCC —más cortos y prácticos que los programas universitarios— pueden generar capital humano calificado en poco tiempo. La crisis económica provocada por la pandemia del Covid-19 ha acentuado tendencias latentes como la automatización, el uso de plataformas electrónicas y la necesidad del aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida. Para hacer frente a estas demandas, se hace indispensable la formación complementaria y readaptación profesional de la población —una tarea particularmente adecuada para los PCC. La vía rápida hacia nuevas competencias: programas cortos de educación superior en América Latina y el Caribe explora los resultados del mercado laboral y los retornos de los PCC, estudia quiénes son sus proveedores e identifica las prácticas adoptadas por los mejores programas. Este volumen, fundamentado en datos exclusivos que incluyen una novedosa encuesta a directores de PCC en cinco países de ALC, concluye que, si bien los PCC generan, en promedio, buenos resultados en el mercado laboral, su calidad varía en gran medida. Los proveedores de PCC se adaptan con rapidez y flexibilidad a las necesidades de la economía local, y las prácticas específicas relacionadas con el personal docente, el apoyo a la búsqueda de empleo y la interacción con los posibles empleadores constituyen características inherentes a los mejores programas.
