Tempted for Us
Author: John E. McKinley
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1606088769
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
This is an approach to Christ's impeccability and temptation through exploring and evaluating the theological models that have been developed from the early church to the present day. Drawing from tradition and the relevant biblical evidence, John McKinley argues that Jesus was truly tempted in ways that are closely relevant to the temptations common to us. Having been tempted for us in this way, Jesus can provide true help as the credible example to follow and truly sympathetic ally in the fight against sin. Key to understanding how Jesus remained unable to sin and sharply vulnerable to temptation is the role of the Holy Spirit.

Higher Ground
Author: Sally Kitch
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226438566
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
Many feminists love a utopia—the idea of restarting humanity from scratch or transforming human nature in order to achieve a prescribed future based on feminist visions. Some scholars argue that feminist utopian fiction can be used as a template for creating such a future. However, Sally L. Kitch argues that associating feminist thought with utopianism is a mistake. Drawing on the history of utopian thought, as well as on her own research on utopian communities, Kitch defines utopian thinking, explores the pitfalls of pursuing social change based on utopian ideas, and argues for a "higher ground" —a contrasting approach she calls realism. Replacing utopianism with realism helps to eliminate self-defeating notions in feminist theory, such as false generalization, idealization, and unnecessary dichotomies. Realistic thought, however, allows feminist theory to respond to changing circumstances, acknowledge sameness as well as difference, value the past and the present, and respect ideological give-and-take. An important critique of feminist thought, Kitch concludes with a clear, exciting vision for a feminist future without utopia.

What Type of Christian Are You
Author: Thomas Ernst
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
Did you ever ask God, "What do you want me to do?" Maybe you made some bad decisions in life, and you know God has a purpose for you. Or maybe you have been very successful with everything you've done, but you feel something is missing, and you know God wants you to do something special. So you are alone with God and you cry out to God to tell you what he wants you to do. "Please, please tell me what you want me to do. God, please tell me my purpose." No answer. So you talk to your clergy and ask why God does not answer you. They tell you, "Sometimes God says yes or no, or maybe, the answer is wait." What if the wait is that God answered you, but you did not hear him? Yes, I will say it again, maybe, what if the wait is that God answered you but you did not hear him? Maybe it is your relationship with God? What type of Christian are you? Are you a good sheep who has a strong relationship with God where you attended church and do your daily devotions? Are you a baad sheep (say it like a sheep would baa with a d) who only visits his house on Sunday and don't talk with him during the week? Just think, your strongest relationships in life are not where you spend an hour hearing about someone and you just listening. Also, what is going on with America today? Why is God being pushed out of his country. Yes, God's country. Israel is God's people, but America is God's country. God is on all the documents that make this great nation and on its currency. It is God's country. There is no way we can make America great again unless we turn back to God and work on our relationships with him. Is the chapter of Romans in God's book a warning to America? History does repeat itself. Maybe that is why some organizations want to change America's history and others want God out of this great country. So come with me on this journey to find out what type of Christian you are. Let's find out what type of sheep you are. Let's also find out if Romans, the chapter in the Bible, is a warning to America today.

Robert Kilwardby
Author: José Filipe Silva
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197510876
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
Archbishop of Canterbury from 1272 until his death in 1279, the Dominican friar Robert Kildwardby has long been known primarily for his participation in the Oxford Prohibitions of 1277, but his contributions spread far wider. A central figure in the Late Middle Ages, Kilwardby was one of the earliest commentators of the work of Aristotle, as well as an unwavering proponent of Augustinian thought and a believer of the plurality of forms. Although he was a prominent thinker of the time, key areas of his philosophical thought remain unexamined in contemporary scholarship. José Filipe Silva here offers the first book-length analysis of Kilwardby's full body of work, which is essential in understanding both the reception of Aristotle in the Latin West and the developments of later medieval philosophy. Beginning with his early philosophical commitments, Silva tracks Kilwardby's life and academic thought, including his theories on knowledge, moral happiness, and the nature of the soul, along with his attempts to reconcile Augustinian and Aristotelian thought. Ultimately, Robert Kilwardby offers a comprehensive overview of an unsung scholar, solidifying his philosophical legacy as one of the most influential authors of the Late Middle Ages.
