Presented theoretically and experimentally are (1) the feasibility of simulating a nuclear blast environment by detonating a gas and (2) determination of the initial conditions of hydrogen-oxygen mixtures to yield blast waves of the same pressure-velocity relationship as that in air shock waves. When the theory was derived by predicting the characteristics of the simulated blast waves, a computer program was written. Experimental data were used to adjust the computed data. The experiments were conducted in a 13-inch-diameter, high-pressure shock tube and yielded four mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen capable of simulating shock waves with overpressures of from 300 to 1,200 psi. It was found that detonation waves may be substituted for air shock waves when the incident loading is important and that applications are generally limited to instances in which only one characteristic of an air shock is simulated. Oblique Detonation Wave (ODW) is a key component for hypersonic combustion engines. Its understanding is essential for designing combustors but reliable information on combustion process and exact ODW structure are difficult to obtain. Axisymmetric sharp cones can produce the purest two-dimensional ODW. This study simulates conical ODWs with hypersonic inflow of stoichiometric H2-air at Mach 7.36, using axisymmetric multi-species Laminar Navier-Stokes equations with the Jachimowski and Lutz combustion models. Numerical solutions of inviscid flow, at 40°, 35° and 32° cones, show steady-state overdriven ODW ignited by the pressure coupling of a shock wave and deflagration waves. At 30.5° and 30° cones, the ODWs are near the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) condition and the coupling occurs between the shock wave and an internal post-shock ODW. The predicted CJ condition is between 30° and 29.5°, with constant detonation angle and minimum entropy being 42.3° and 1864 JkgK . The induction distance is the most sensitive parameter.

The 24th International Symposium on Shock Waves (ISSW24) was held at the Beijing Friendship Hotel during July 11-16, 2004, in Beijing. It was a great pleasure for the Local Organizing Committee to organize the ISSW in China for the first time, because forty-seven years have passed since the First Shock Tube Symposium was held in 1957 at Albuquerque. The ISSW24 had to be postponed for one year because of the SARS outbreak in Beijing shortly before the Symposium was scheduled to be held in 2003, but it has achieved success due to the continuous support and kind understanding from all the delegates. It is very heart-warming to have had such an experience and I am very happy to have served as chairman for the Symposium. I would like to thank all for the contributions and help that they have given us over the past three years, without which we would not have had the Symposium. A total of 460 abstracts were submitted to the ISSW24. Each of the abstracts was evaluated by three members of the Scientific Review Committee and the decision on acceptance wasmade based on the reviewers' reports. 195oral papers,including 9plenary lectures, wereaccepted to be presented in three parallel sessions, and 135poster papers in three dedicated poster sessions. The objective of this research is to simulate normal detonation combustion which is a mode of operation for a Pulsed Detonation Engine (PDE). A supersonic flow with stoichiometric hydrogen-air mixture is made to impinge on a wedge, thus resulting in increasing the temperature and pressure across a shock wave leading to the formation of detonation wave. Different modes of the operations can be simulated by varying the incoming Mach number, pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio. For the case of normal detonation wave mode which is an unsteady process, after the detonation being initiated due to the shock induced by the wedge, the detonation wave propagates upstream in the flow as the combustion chamber Mach number is lower than the C-J Mach number. The concept of detonation wave moving upstream and downstream is controlled by changing the incoming flow field properties. By this method the unsteady normal detonation wave is made to oscillate in the combustion chamber leading to a continuous detonation combustion. The intention of this research is to simulate two cycles of detonation combustion in order to determine the frequency and to obtain the variation of flow properties at the exit plain with respect to time.
