On the eastern slope of the Cascade Range, it occurs north of about latitude 45 degrees and only at higher elevations. On the west side of the Cascades, where it is most abun dant, and in the Coast Range, where it occurs sparsely, it grows be tween 1, 400 and 6, 000 feet elevation, extending in the Cascades from the Canadian border to northern California.
