Discovered by Edward G. Acheson about 1890, silicon carbide is one of the oldest materials and also a new material. It occurs naturally in meteorites, but in very small amounts and is not in a useable state as an industrial material. For industrial require ments, large amounts of silicon carbide must be synthesized by solid state reactions at high temperatures. Silicon carbide has been used for grinding and as an abrasive material since its discovery. During World War II, silicon carbide was used as a heating element; however, it was difficult to obtain high density sintered silicon carbide bodies. In 1974, S. Prochazka reported that the addition of small amounts of boron compounds and carbide were effective in the sintering process to obtain high density. It was then possible to produce high density sintered bodies by pressureless sintering methods in ordinary atmosphere. Since this development, silicon carbide has received great attention as one of the high temperature structural ceramic materials. Since the 1970s, many research papers have appeared which report studies of silicon carbide and silicon nitride for structural ceramics.

The objective of this research program is to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of producing solar-cell-quality sheet silicon by coating one surface of carbonized ceramic substrates with a thin layer of large-grain polycrystalline silicon from the melt. During the past year, the cell development task of the low-cost solar array project has also sponsored work leading to the solution of solar-cell-oriented problems unique to silicon-on-ceramic material. This work is described also. Fracture toughness and thermal shock measurements were made on various mullite compositions. The dip-coater experimentation involved using a variety of crucible positions and gas flow rates to improve coating speeds. The construction of the continuous coating facility was completed. Many modifications to the original design have been made to obtain better control of the temperature profile of the coater. An experimental dip-coater has been completed. The goal of this effort is to increase coating speeds to from 0.15 to 0.3 cm/sec without sacrificing material quality. The best slotted SOC cell fabricated to date has a 7.5 percent conversion efficiency (antireflective-coated, AM1, total area 4.1 cm2). A standardized cell fabrication process was developed for slotted and unslotted SOC solar cells. Modeling activities have concentrated on three major areas: silicon growth, device design, and economic analysis. An economic projection was made using standard SAMICS procedures which indicated the target cost of $18/m2 for silicon sheet could be met for certain SOC manufacturing conditions.

This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the November 7-9, 1977 Conference on PROCESSING OF CRYSTALLINE CERAMICS, held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was the Fourteenth in a series of "University Conferences on Ceramic Science" initiated in 1964 and still coordinated by a founding group of four ceramic related institutions, of which North Carolina State University is a charter member, along with the University of California at Berkeley, Notre Dame University, and the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In addition, two other ceramic-oriented schools, the University of Florida and Case-Western Reserve University, have also hosted Conferences in the series. These research-oriented conferences, each uniquely concerned with a timely ceramic theme, have been well attended by audiences which typically were both inter national and interdisciplinary in character; their published Proceedings have been well received and are frequently cited. This three day conference was concerned with (a) scientific aspects of all process steps which must be combined and controlled effectively and sequentially in producing crystalline ceramics (both oxides and nonoxides), and (b) utilization of these principles in developing processes for several classes of advanced ceramics critical to present and future technology.
