Book Description
Edgar Award Winner, 2001 Los Angeles Times Book Prize, 2001 With the horrible scars of a childhood tragedy forever burned across his face, Joe Trona is scared in more ways than one. Rescued from an orphanage by powerful California politician Will Trona, Joe grows up to be Will's right hand man—gopher, driver, confidante, bodyguard, fixer. When Will Trona is gunned down in a dark alley in a hail of bullets, quiet, obedient Joe vows revenge. Looking through his father's life Joe finds his girlfriends, his deals, his friends and enemies. And Joe realizes how many secrets his father possessed and how many people he had the power to harm. But two leads come to the surface of his private investigation—a kidnapped girl being held by her own psychotic brother, and two rival street gangs who have joined forces. The truths he learns about his father's murder are shocking. And the final truth he hears about what happened to his own face when he was just a baby in a crib changes his life forever—and once again. T. Jefferson Parker is a New York Times bestselling author and three-time Edgar Award winner. "Sun-drenched L.A. noir." —People "Parker has written a page-turner as strong and smart as its protagonist. And, in Joe's case, that's saying something." —The San Francisco Chronicle "... an intricately layered story... perhaps Parker's most ambitious work to date." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) "It's too bad there are no book awards for originality. If there were, this year veteran crime writer T. Jefferson Parker would win hands down thanks to the title character of his latest book, Silent Joe, a brilliantly conceived and boldly innovative hero who makes this Parker's best work yet." —Providence Sunday Journal "T. Jefferson Parker's latest California mystery is worth shouting about."—People

Halo: Retribution
Author: Troy Denning
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1501138375
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
An original full-length novel set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times bestselling video game series! December 2553. Less than a year after the end of the Covenant War, a string of violent incidents continues to threaten the tenuous peace in human-held space, culminating in the assassination of UNSC fleet admiral Graselyn Tuwa and the abduction of her family. It is a provocation so outrageous that the Office of Naval Intelligence must retaliate swiftly and ferociously—but only after its operatives identify her killer and rescue the hostages. This mission will be the first for homicide-detective-turned-ONI-operative Veta Lopis and her young team of Spartan-IIIs, and something feels wrong from the start. The obvious suspect is an infamous Brute dokab who leads the Keepers of the One Freedom, a Covenant splinter group in fierce opposition to the UNSC. But Lopis and her team soon realize that the truth is much more insidious than they could ever have imagined, and along with Fred-104, Kelly-087, and Linda-058 of Blue Team for combat support, must stop a plan hatched in the bowels of the secret research station Argent Moon—a plan so sinister it could destroy all those still reeling from thirty years of intergalactic conflict...

Altruistically Inclined?
Author: Alexander J. Field
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472027263
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
Altruistically Inclined? examines the implications of recent research in the natural sciences for two important social scientific approaches to individual behavior: the economic/rational choice approach and the sociological/anthropological. It considers jointly two controversial and related ideas: the operation of group selection within early human evolutionary processes and the likelihood of modularity—domain-specific adaptations in our cognitive mechanisms and behavioral predispositions. Experimental research shows that people will often cooperate in one-shot prisoner's dilemma (PD) games and reject positive offers in ultimatum games, contradicting commonly accepted notions of rationality. Upon first appearance, predispositions to behave in this fashion could not have been favored by natural selection operating only at the level of the individual organism. Emphasizing universal and variable features of human culture, developing research on how the brain functions, and refinements of thinking about levels of selection in evolutionary processes, Alexander J. Field argues that humans are born with the rudiments of a PD solution module—and differentially prepared to learn norms supportive of it. His emphasis on failure to harm, as opposed to the provision of affirmative assistance, as the empirically dominant form of altruistic behavior is also novel. The point of departure and principal point of reference is economics. But Altruistically Inclined? will interest a broad range of scholars in the social and behavioral sciences, natural scientists concerned with the implications of research and debates within their fields for the conduct of work elsewhere, and educated lay readers curious about essential features of human nature. Alexander J. Field is the Michel and Mary Orradre Professor of Economics at Santa Clara University.
