It was very difficult time for the Kurds, because Kurdish people began a revolution against the Iraqi government. The Kurdistan leadership under Mustafa Barzani took arms struggle against the government, due the government denied the Kurdish rights such as autonomy. The Iraqi government attacked the Kurdish cities, towns and villages in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurds existed thousands of years before the arrival of the Arabs in the Middle East. In July 1963 the Iraqi troops brutally attacked the innocent Kurdish civilians. My father was a police officer at the local police station in Sulaimaniyah, and he knew that the Iraqi Military would attack our city and the other provinces of Kurdistan. My dad told us to be ready to leave the city and go to the town of Berzinje, we all left except my dad and then to the village of Wenderene. Then my father arrived too, and said the military imprisoned, and killed, so many innocent people including teenagers. We had two big photos of Mustafa Barzani and Mam Jalal Talabani, my father tried to break the photos, but he cut his fingers while doing that. The son of our x-landlord was killed without any legitimate reason; his parents buried him in the house. My aunties friend Kak Fars helped us a lot in the village. My grandfather had a donkey in order to get him to the vineyard in Berzinje. My dad asked us to go to the village of Wanderene and take some foods and blankets. We tried our best in order to hide from the Iraqi (National Guards), these troops were sent from Baghdad the capital of Iraq.

The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. The concept of “camp narratives” rather than “Holocaust narratives” or “Gulag narratives” is based on the assumption that literary accounts of camp experiences share common traits, aesthetically as well as thematically. The book presents readings of camp literature that underscore the similarities between texts about Soviet gulag camps, Nazi camps and about other camp experiences. While literature about Nazi concentration camps still serves as a point of reference for camp narratives in the same way that the Holocaust serves as a point of reference for other genocidal operations, socialist labor and penal camps have become transnational lieux de mémoire in their own right since 1989. This volume intends to provide a theoretical frame as well as an overview of several important European camp literatures and case studies of iconic camp narratives and to take a comparative and transnational perspective on the genre of the camp narrative.

At one time in Europe, there was a point to pain: physical suffering could be a path to redemption. This religious notion suggested that truth was lodged in the body and could be achieved through torture. In Tortured Subjects, Lisa Silverman tells the haunting story of how this idea became a fixed part of the French legal system during the early modern period. Looking closely at the theory and practice of judicial torture in France from 1600 to 1788, the year in which it was formally abolished, Silverman revisits dossiers compiled in criminal cases, including transcripts of interrogations conducted under torture, as well as the writings of physicians and surgeons concerned with the problem of pain, records of religious confraternities, diaries and letters of witnesses to public executions, and the writings of torture's abolitionists and apologists. She contends that torture was at the center of an epistemological crisis that forced French jurists and intellectuals to reconsider the relationship between coercion and sincerity, or between free will and evidence. As the philosophical consensus on which torture rested broke down, and definitions of truth and pain shifted, so too did the foundation of torture, until by the eighteenth century, it became an indefensible practice.
