Book Description
This study was conducted to investigate ways of increasing the legibility of signs with high background brightness. Research was limited to silver, yellow, and orange encapsulated lens sheeting materials, and modifications were made within the standards for highway signs as specified in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The results of the study show that in Virginia the legibility of selected signs with high background brightness can be increased by modifying the letter design.

Book Description
The ubiquitous nature of transport signs on roadways, railways, and in airports can lead to an overload of visual information, yet little research has been done to understand the design and use of such signs from a driver‘s perspective. The Human Factors of Transport Signs explores key transport sign research and examines new technologies

Book Description
This report is a summary of some of the information that was assembled and presented in final report FHWA-TS-90-043 entitled, "Guidelines on the Use of Changeable Message Signs". This summary report focuses on matrix-type CMSs, with particular attention to the newer light-emitting signs. Although there are many types of new and emerging CMS technologies, CMSs that have actually been installed for highway applications are emphasized.

Book Description
The fourth edition of the Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics has been completely revised and updated. This includes all existing third edition chapters plus new chapters written to cover new areas. These include the following subjects: Managing low-back disorder risk in the workplace Online interactivity Neuroergonomics Office ergonomics Social networking HF&E in motor vehicle transportation User requirements Human factors and ergonomics in aviation Human factors in ambient intelligent environments As with the earlier editions, the main purpose of this handbook is to serve the needs of the human factors and ergonomics researchers, practitioners, and graduate students. Each chapter has a strong theory and scientific base, but is heavily focused on real world applications. As such, a significant number of case studies, examples, figures, and tables are included to aid in the understanding and application of the material covered.

Book Description
"This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers in federal, state, provincial, and local transportation agencies who are responsible for the design and operation of safe and efficiency highway systems. It will also be useful to consulting traffic engineers, sign manufacturers, and vendors in the private sector who assist governmental clients in the application of changeable message sign (CMS) and other intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology. It is an update of NCHRP Synthesis no. 61 (1979)."--Avant-propos.

Book Description
Static and dynamic legibility studies were conducted to investigate the effects of level of reflectivity, letter series, stroke width, letter spacing, font, letter height, and driver age. The dynamic study also considered the effect of sign size and retroreflectivity on the level of conspicuity. As expected, driver age had the largest effect on both legibility and conspicuity. In fact, the daytime legibility for older drivers is almost as poor as night legibility. Level of retroreflectivity, letter series, and letter height all had a significant effect on legibility. Increases in letter height resulted in proportionate increases in legibility up to about 600 ft (183 m).
