The Battle of Wӧrth, August 6th, 1870 The ridge cast of Worth, which had been surveyed and reported on so early as 1818 as an excellent flank position against an invasion of Alsace, is a spur of the Vosges Mountains. The Vosges in this district nowhere attain a height of more than 1550 feet; but they are covered with forest from crest to foot, broken up into many parallel ridges, and traversed by few roads. The passes are narrow, the slopes steep; and the range, 16 - 20 miles in breadth, constitutes a formidable military obstacle. This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the United States is involved in two ongoing wars, faces a significant international terrorist threat, and is witnessing an escalation of international resistance to its leadership of the global world order. Looking out to 2025, many see the potential for a prolonged period of instability as a result of competing economic models, demographics, the rise of new international actors and the resurgence old ones, climate change, and the scarcity of resources.
