Book Description
Valuable not only for their sublime musical expression, the African American spirituals give us profound insights into the human condition and the Christian life. Many focus on an essential scene of the Christian drama: the coming of God as the child in Bethlehem and as the hope of the world and the liberator of God's oppressed people. In these devotions for the season of Advent, Luke Powery leads the reader through the spirituals as they confront the mystery of incarnation and redemption. In Rise Up, Shepherd! each devotion features the lyrics of the spiritual, a reflection on the spiritual's meaning, a Scripture verse, and a brief prayer.

Book Description
This book of poetry does not read like a novel because of its rhyme, brevity and omission of detail. However, it is meant to teach, inspire, and awaken, opening eyes, ears and hearts to help examine ourselves, see who we as a people are, where we are headed and where we are taking our children, families, communities and nation, and what we can to do to help bring aboutor restorewholeness in our lives and the lives of others. The first poem in the collection, The Child Whod Come is inspired by a real and overlooked little girl caught in an unwholesome situation not of her making. Another poem, Grand Guardian, was inspired by real people. It is, though, written to a wider population who may be in the same circumstances as the individual whose silent, passionate voice we hear as we read, and the human subjects that the individual addresses. Other poems in the collection are reflections on Almighty God and the love he has for his people and creation. Still others have personal thoughts that I want to sharewith you as well as those who are special to my heart. A PASSAGE INTO LIFE is for people who are hurting; also for hopeful people, joyful people, people of faith, and people who have little faith or no faith. It is for saint and sinner alike. It is to help anyone who has been hurt mentally, physically or spiritually. It is also for anyone who harms others in a big way or small way, any way at all. I believe that everyone who finds himself or herself in trouble in this life can find a way out. You will need the help of others who love the Lord God, who genuinely care about what happens to you. They may not always seem to do things the right wayyour way. They may seem like they are hypocrites or insincere at times, or seem harsh, giving you some tough love. But they can be your stepping stone, to lift you up out of deep despair, disgrace, shame, unhappiness and hopelessness if you are willing to listen to the voice of the Lord in His grace and wisdom, and believe the Lord will help you. The voice and word of God tells us of the good and the evil things that happen in this life. When we find ourselves facing problems, troubles or the worst of evils, God can lead us to what is good and perfect through Jesus Christ. When some people have done things to harm and hurt you, call the Lord!!! God can pick you up and lead you into healing, goodness, and wholeness so that you will be able to keep on going in this life no matter what may happen or what may have happened to you in the past. It is important that you believe God is real, and that this real, living God who created us all and all things in the world and beyond, is not just somewhere out there, but always near to you and the situation you may find yourself in, whether youve been listening to him or not. Learn what God can do to and for all kinds of people and what He has done through Jesus Christ with people who lost belief and faith in God, or who have stopped paying attention to Him. If you never knew Godor about Godor you lost your belief and faith in Him, you must learn or re-learn about this Creator and keeper of us all. The Holy Scripturesthe Bible, the word of Godis the key. It is important to know that someone faithful to the Lord God can help you understand. Pray, and ask God about this. I believe in God through Jesus Christ. You may guess that I am a member of the Christian faitha sinnerwho sometimes thinks she is doing the right thing, the best thing, only to find she has made mistakes in judgment or in what she has done, without knowing better or thinking that it was right or the better thing to do at the ti

Book Description
In 1894 Jesus appeared in a dream to Rainisoalambo during a period of intense national crisis shortly before the French colonial invasion of Madagascar. An educated member of the southern highlands aristocracy, Rainisoalambo was also a traditional medicine man who had fallen into grave difficulty. Being stricken with a case of then-rampant leprosy, his business had vanished and he and his family were starving. In this vision, Jesus told Rainisoalambo to put away his sampy, the small idols and charms he used for his traditional divining and healing. When he awoke, he found that he was healed. He quickly got rid of his charms and began a new life of fervent prayer, witnessing to his neighbors about what had happened, and reading the gospels with new eyes, as current reality rather than ancient reports of the far-away dealings of the white man's god. A group of believers soon gathered around him. Within a year of intense activity they had formally organized themselves at Soatanana into what we would now call a base community, the Disciples of the Lord. Their simple rules called them to lives of economic sharing and self-sufficiency, cleanliness and orderliness in their persons, houses, and lands, learning to read the Bible, daily communal prayers and study, and sending out apostles and evangelists to establish other such households and communities. This was the beginning of what is now called the Fifohazana, or Awakening. More than a century later the movement comprises several tobys, or base communities, following the appearance of several more prophets, female and male, and their miracle-working. The members of the movement, or mpiandry, live throughout the island, some in the tobys but most in the cities and villages as members of a variety of churches. The Fifohazana continues to stress spiritual healings, exorcisms, personal service to the poor and sick, cleanliness, prayer, Bible study, and witnessing. This volume provides the reader with a very clear understanding of what the Fifohazanamovement is all about historically, theologically, in terms of the main characters involved, its tremendous contributions to what a Christian healing ministry might ideally be, and as it relates to the larger world of church and society. The book is strengthened by the contributions of a diverse international group of scholars and participants in the movement. This has fostered the creation of an authentic piece of research, which combines the actual voices of participants within the movement itself along with the perspectives of scholars, who analyze the movement from the external periphery. This is the first book-length treatment of the Fifohazana in English. Editor Cynthia Holder Rich has gathered contributions from authors from five countries, including several members of the movement, to offer several perspectives onto the history and current life of the movement. Articles include analysis of major movement leaders, the place of healing in the movement, history of the conflict between the missions and the movement, the significance of oral expression in proclamation and as a means of revival, the role of women as leaders in the movement, and theological issues. The Fifohazana is one of the most intriguing current instances of indigenous Christianity in the world. While the movement has greatly evolved and changed in over a century, Jesus continues to appear and raise up new leaders. Various branches of the movement have developed a variety of institutions, but the movement has not lost its power of transformation and change. The Fifohazana: Madagascar's Indigenous Christian Movement is an important volume for research libraries, universities, African studies institutions and theological schools."

Book Description
Living on his family's farm in Nebraska, John Shepherd and his wife Jackie know humanity's days are numbered. Despite battling with depression and the tragic end of his military career, John's fighter-pilot spirit is strong, and he can't afford to stand by and watch an unbelieving world as they face a global disaster that is less than three years away. With dreams haunted by images of war, and now by a divine calling, he knows that his Maker is counting on him to build a colossal craft capable of carrying its passengers through space on an uncertain trek in search of a new home. Failure at any stage will lead to cataclysmic death, but John can't give in to fear, with the horrors of Earth's destruction hurtling toward mankind with inescapable vengeance. Travel with John as he sets out on an unpopular, righteous path to build a lifeboat for a select few--human, plant, and animal--to journey through space on an epic pilgrimage. Will he be able to convince a blind world that he can offer salvation from the apocalypse? Rise of Humanity is the first book in the Shepherd's Salvation saga.
