Book Description
This book relies on a multidisciplinary approach that allows the authors to bear witness to the realities and representations of various urban environments in the English-speaking world in complementary ways. They deal with the motifs of urban identity and expression from several methodological and theoretical perspectives (sociolinguistics, soundscapes, architecture, stylistics, literature). This book analyses the representations of and the changes in urban identity through different forms of linguistic and artistic expression associated with several English-speaking towns and cities. The protagonists are, in order of appearance, Sydney, Melbourne, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Houghton-le-Spring, Kolkata, New York City, London, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Dublin and Edinburg.

Book Description
Place has always been central to studies of language, variation and change. Since the eighteenth century, dialectologists have been mapping language features according to boundaries - both physical and institutional. In the twentieth century, variationist sociolinguists developed techniques to correlate language use with speakers' orientations to place. More recently, perceptual dialectologists are examining the cognitive and ideological processes involved in language-place correlations and working on ways to understand how speakers mentally process space. Bringing together research from across the field of language variation, this volume explores the extent of twenty-first century approaches to place. It features work from both established and influential scholars, and up and coming researchers, and brings language variation research up to date. The volume focuses on four key areas of research: processes of language variation and change across time and space; methods and datasets for regional analysis; perceptions of the local in language research; and ideological representations of place.

Book Description
The present volume brings together leading scholars studying language change from a variety of sociolinguistic perspectives, complementing and enriching the existing literature by providing readers with a kaleidoscopic perspective of aspects of change in English from around 1700 until the present day. The volume presents a collection of in-depth studies on a broad spectrum of phonetic, lexical, grammatical and discourse variation, drawing on historical corpora, dictionaries, metalinguistic commentary, ego-documents, spoken language and survey data. Apart from advancing our knowledge of processes of language change in varieties of English, including British English, Irish English, Australian English, South African English, American English and Canadian English, the individual chapters contribute to the theoretical debates on variation and change in Late Modern as well as Present-day English.

Book Description
A dialect is a regional or social variant of a language, typically influenced by regional or social background. Dialects can be distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and accents. Yorkshire is the largest county in England, and has a vast range of dialects to match. The Sheffield dialect is one of the greatest historical assortments of English. The Sheffield dialect has numerous shortenings to its words and phrases. Towns that surround Sheffield such as Barnsley, Chesterfield and Doncaster nicknamed the residents of Sheffield 'dee-dars'. This is because Sheffielders' are famously known to use the sound of 'D', instead of the traditional pronunciation of 'th'. Dialect words such as 'thee' and 'thou' end up sounding like 'dee' and 'daa', hence the derived nickname 'dee-dars'.
