Excerpt from Sheep Farming in America The traveler in England, Scotland and parts of France and Germany is impressed by the importance Of the sheep industry to these lands. Sheep farms are Often found close together and Of large size with great numbers Of sheep thereon. The writer has stood on one hill in Dorsetshire and counted eight shepherd's, each with his flock Of about 400 ewes and their lambs, in sight at one time. Nearby, in an adjoining county, flocks Of Hampshires exist as large as on farms Of not above acres of not extra soil. These flocks are very profitable and they make rich soils that without the sheep would be hardly worth cultivating. They exist in wonderful health and vigor on lands that have been shéeped since civilization peopled the land. In Scotland and the Cheviot hills flocks exist over the entire land, and without sheep the land would almost lapse into wilderness. In France on lands worth $250 per acre great flocks Of mutton sheep are kept. The agricul ture of these countries leans strongly on the sheep. Long experience in maintaining fertility, in creating it, has taught the farmers that without the flocks they cannot continue profitable agriculture. Sheep fit in well to an intensive system of agriculture. They are docile, tractable, easily kept within bounds. Excerpt from Sheep Husbandry: A Work Prepared for the Farmers of Tennessee The question as to the capability of Tennessee as a sheep growing section has long been settled, and, therefore, it is unnecessary to bring forward any arguments on the subject. Not only is this State well calculated to make sheep hus bandry profitable, but it has claims in an especial degree that are not possessed by any other States of our Union. This industry has of late years received an impetus not hitherto known, from the introduction of a system of rail roads all over the United States. Before their general con struction lambs could be bought at any time for one dollar apiece, in fact, the farmer considered himself amply re remunerated if he secured that price. N ow, the great markets of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and, in fact, all the northern and eastern cities, from Louisville and Cincinnati to St. Paul and Portland, in Maine, draw their early lambs from the more genial climes of the South, and so great is the competition that the farmer who has large fat lambs to sell in May or the first of June can get from three to four dollars apiece. Nor does the market cease with the early ones, but extends through the entire summer for all grades of lambs, and later for fat ewes and wethers. This stimulus has acted so strongly upon sheep raising that no farmer Should, or does, think his farm stocked without a flock of sheep ranging from a score or two to several thousand, according to the capacity of the farm or range. And not only has it shown itself in the increased numbers raised, but it has acted in a wonderful manner in improving the stock or character of the sheep. Excerpt from Domestic Breeds of Sheep in America The e ect of climate is strikingly illustrated in the evolution of the sheep industry of the extreme Northwest. The Willamette Valley ln Oregon, now so famous for its long wools, was once partly occupied by fine - wool sheep. The large amount of rainfall, which comes in a long continued drizzle, caused the hay and Weed seeds that became lodged in the Wool to grow and become green upon the sheep 's back. The Merino breeds were decidedly out of place there. After a time the Lincoln and other long-wool breeds Were introduced and the industry assumed a di rerent aspect. Their long locks act as a thatch, carrying the water and these breeds thrive as they do in few other places except their native counties in England. The kind of feed produced is of importance. The larger breeds have developed upon land that has produced abundantly. They are capable of taking care of a larger amount of feed, such as the moist fertile lowlands produce, while the smaller breeds succeed better upon the less abundant fare of drier and less fertile pastures. There is evidently some connection between the general higher quality of the smaller breeds and the scanty, more nutritious feeds that they receive under natural conditions.
