Sharing the Light explores historical and philosophical shifts in the depiction of women and virtue in the early centuries of the Chinese state. These changes had far-reaching effects on both the treatment of women in Chinese society and on the formation of Chinese philosophical discourse on ethics, cosmology, epistemology, and self-cultivation. Warring States and Han dynasty narratives frequently represented women as intellectually adroit, politically astute, and ethically virtuous; these histories, discourses, and life stories portray women as active participants within their own society, not inert victims of it. The women depicted resembled sages, ministers, and generals as the mainstays and destroyers of dynasties. These stories emphasized that sagacity, intellect, strategy, and statecraft were virtues proper to women, an emphasis that effectively disappeared from later collections and instruction texts by and for women. During the same period, there were also important changes in the understanding of two polarities that delineated what now is called gender. Han correlative cosmology included a range of hierarchical analogies between yin and yang and men and women, and the understanding of yin and yang shifted from complementarity toward hierarchy. Similarly, the doctrine of separate spheres (inner and outer, nei-wai) shifted from a notion of appropriate distinction between men and women toward physical, social, and intellectual separation and isolation.

This book seeks to give form to a theology that hyphenates two traditions that have not only been in constant conflict during most of their historical encounters but are also presented as opposite blocks in the threatening 'clash of civilizations' at the beginning of the third millennium: Islam and Christianity. Based on experiences of dialogue between the three Abrahamic faiths, this book analyzes historical and contemporary processes of interreligious dialogue between Christians and Muslims in order to arrive at a concept of dialogue as 'mutual emulation.' It shows how, in their theologies of religious others, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have based their images of others on their self-images. This characteristic makes traditional theologies of religion quite unsuitable for interreligious dialogue. Consequently, the author of this book develops a model in which comparative theology and interreligious dialogue are connected by studying - as a Christian theologian - the theological and spiritual sources of his Muslim dialogue partners. These exercises in comparative Muslim-Christian theology comprise both the medieval (Aquinas, al-Ghazali, Rumi) and the modern periods (Said Nursi, Fethullah Gülen, Tariq Ramadan). An interlude on Teresa of Avila's poem Nada te turbe shows how Christians may recover important insights from their own tradition by reading these Muslim theological and spiritual sources.

The present volume and volume I "Hector: New Ways in Education and Research" present the results of HECTOR, the four year cooperation project between the Univer sity of Karlsruhe and IBM Germany (represented by the European Networking Center and Scientific Center in Heidelberg as well as IBM Research in Riischlikon). The pro ject was started in spring 1984 and will end in April 1988 with a congress. This congress addresses the scientific community to present experiences and results with a program of lectures and demonstrations. The HECTOR Project has two major aspects: the first is to explore new ways in uni versity education. The second aspect of HECTOR comprises basic research work to develop new technological concepts for the establishment of computer communication networks, supporting academic research and education in all disciplines. The underlying concept is that now and in the future, computer, software and commu nication systems which are required for the broad range of scientific and educational tasks will be of different technical orientation and made by different manufacturers. These diverse systems will, however, need to coexist and cooperate side by side. Today, in most cases, different hardware and software architectures of different manu facturers prevent a scientist or student from choosing freely the computer and software which offers the best alternative for solving his or her current problem. The mutual cooperation of the academic users is also hindered substantially by the many incompa tibilities present. The users' future is therefore transparency in a heterogeneous envi ronment.
