Book Description
Excerpt from Julius Caesar (Shakespeare) The high school teachers who have prepared these guides have had years of experience with the mind that is confronted with a great literary work for the first time. They have given just such information and suggestive guidance as will enable the student fully to understand and enjoy the masterpiece, without being lost in a mass of irrelevant and dry discussion. They have arranged their material so as to make it possible for the student, if necessary, to pursue his work independently, whether his aim be the preparation for an examination or the furthering of his general culture. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Edited, With Notes Minor Changes have been made throughout the Notes. Some have been condensed, some have been expanded, and new ones have been added here and there. All references to my editions of other plays have been omitted, their place being supplied by independent notes. Though no radical Changes have been made in the original plan, the present edition is substantially a new book, and many teachers will, I think, prefer it to the old one. Both, however, can be used, without serious inconvenience, in the same class or Club. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar IN preparing this edition of julz'us Cesar I have derived great assistance from the Elizabethan lore of Mr. W. J. Craig, the editor of Lear, in the same series. I have consulted almost all the recent editions of jzdz'as Cesar, especially the very exhaustive and able edition prepared for Indian Colleges by Mr. Mark Hunter, Principal of the Government College, Mangalore. Mr. Moulton's book on Shakespeare's dramatic art has also been of great use to me. My obligation to Dr. Abbott is sufficiently indicated by the frequent references to his Shakespearian Grammar in the notes. The extracts from Plutarch are taken from Skeat's S/zaeespeare's Platarcfz. The references to Shakespeare's plays other than julz'as Cesar are in accordance with the numbering of the lines in the Globe edition. I have not had the temerity to suggest many new readings. For some time I flattered myself that I had improved V. I. 35 by the con version of a full step into a note of interrogation, but it afterwards turned out that the emendation had been anticipated by Delius. I cannot find that any previous commentator has thought of making the return to the reading of all the Folios advocated in my note on III. I. Book Description
Excerpt from A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare: The Tragedie of Julius Caesar The earliest text of Julius Caesar is that of the First Folio. It is markedly free from corruptions, and we may almost say that in but one or two instances would an earlier Quarto text be required to render any doubtful readings more sure. Book Description
Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The notes appended to these pages will be found few in comparison with the noteworthy points. There are not many lines of Shakespeare that do not furnish occasion for some sort of comment. Teachers will use their discretion as to the time they shall linger over any given matter. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not flag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet.
