Excerpt from Shakespeare Three or four years, as it is believed, after his marriage Shakespeare quitted his native town. 'he had, ' says his first biographer, Rowe, 'by a misfortune, common enough to young fellows, fallen into ill company, and, amongst them, some that made a frequent practice of deer-stealing engaged him more than once in robbing a park that belonged to Sir Thomas Lucy, of Charlecote, near Stratford. For this he was prosecuted by that gentleman, as he thought, somewhat too severely; and, in order to revenge that ill-usage, he made a ballad upon him. And though this, probably the first essay of his poetry, be lost, yet it is said to have been so very bitter that it re doubled the prosecution against him to that degree that he was obliged to leave his business and family in Warwickshire for some time, and shelter himself in London.' It seems likely that in essentials the story thus reported by Rowe is true, and a velse of the ballad - whether genuine or written, as is more likely, to suit the story - has been given by Oldys. In The Merry Wives of Windsor Justice Shallow complains of Falstaff 's having killed his deer; there are 'luces' in the Shallow coat-of arms as in that of the Lucy family, which luces in the Welsh parson's pronunciation become 'louses' - a play on words occurring also in the alleged stanza of Shakespeare's offensive ballad. Excerpt from The Old-Spelling Shakespeare, Vol. 8: Being the Works of Shakespeare in the Spelling of the Best Quarto and Folio d104s According to this theory the play must have followed very closely on 2 Henry IV, in which a promise is made of continuing the play with Sir John in it; or Henry V, in which Falstaff's death is reported. It is noteworthy that on the title age of the first Quarto special mention is made of Corporal ym, whose part in the Merry Wiper is confined to a few lines; and it is difficult to account for this - or even for his introduction into the play - except on the ground that he was a known character. There is, perhaps, plausibility in the suggestion of Dr. Johnson that the public disappointment occasioned by the non-appearance of Falstaff in Henry V found its echo in the royal command. On these grounds it may be said that the probability is that the Merry fiver followed Henry V, the argument that the death of Falstaff in the latter work would preclude his revival in a play of which the time is clearly intended to be while Henry V was still the 'madcap Prince of Wales seems totally invalid. Accepting this, the latter part of I 599 may be set down as the probable date of composition. The tradition that Shallow was a caricature of Lucy has received acceptance from many commentators; nothing that is known of Lucy's character would justify us in believing that the immortal Justice was a full-length portrait of Shakespeare's reputed old enemy; but the dozen white luces, ' the deer stealing and Shallow' s exaggerated anger at the incident, and F alstafl' s summary, Twere better for you it were known in counsel; you'll be laughed at, ' suggest irresistibly that Lucy's behaviour is satiric'ally referred to in this scene. As Sir Thomas Lucy died in July 1600 it is obviously improbable that the play was composed after this date, if this tradition is to be accepted in any part or form. Excerpt from Shakespeare's a Midsummer-Night's Dream Why should English Literature be taught in our schools? and, What is the best way of teaching it? These are the questions which I propose to discuss. As preliminary to such discussion, it will, I think, be rightly in place to consider, briefly, what our people are aiming to prepare their children for, and what sort of an education it is the proper business of the school to give; that is to say, what form of mind and character, and what disposition of the faculties, it is meant to impress. Now I take it that a vast majority of the pupils in our schools are not to pass their life as students or as authors. Their main business in this world is to gain an honest living for themselves and for those dependent on them. And no plan of education is just that leaves this prime consideration behind, in quest of any alleged higher aims: for there really are no higher aims; and all pretence of such is a delusion and a snare. Some men, it is true, do more than gain an honest living; but this is the best thing that any man does; as, on the other hand, shining intellectually is the poorest thing that any man does, or can possibly learn to do.
