Book Description
Excerpt from Sewanee Alumni News, 1942-43, Vol. 9 Out of the exigencies Of war has arisen the movement which seems to sound the death-knell of liberal edu cation, certainly for the duration and, as some see it, perhaps forever. It is the program of the War Department whereby at 18 all young men are in ducted into the service, out of whom selected ones are returned to college for a brief period of highly specialized technical training, At the meeting of the Association Of American Colleges, held in Philadelphia in early December, this program of the War Department was presented for consideration, not one voice being raised to present the claims of lib eral education. It was at this point that Dr. Guerry took up the gauntlet and began his energetic campaign for a hearing for the liberal arts colleges. He made it clear from the outset that Sewanee and all liberal arts colleges were ready and willing to make any and every sacrifice necessary to the primary concern of winning the war. He questioned, however, the necessity and the expediency of the sacrifice, and proposed that the program of the War Department include provision for training of students in the liberal arts as welles in the specialized business of war. Book Description
Excerpt from Sewanee Alumni News, Vol. 5: August, 1938 This summary of the talk made by Dr. Guerry at the alumni group meet ings which have been held recently is being printed at the request of a num ber, of alumni. A conception of its purpose and its opportunities is a necessary step towards greatness for any human agency. Not only is such a conception essential to greatness but essential also to security and strength. Every human agency must know what it is it wishes to do, the objectives it desires to realize, the goal it strives to reach. A college or university must have, therefore, a clear understanding of the function it is to perform, of the purpose it is to serve, of the opportunities it is to embrace. Book Description
Excerpt from Sewanee Alumni News, Vol. 8: December, 1941 War has come again to claim armed service of the sons of Sewanee - this time not only with Germany but with Japan and Italy as well. It needs no prophet to foresee a long, hard struggle with the forces that seek to destroy a way of life that is dear to Sewanee men, a way of life made more precious because Sewanee has taught us its finer and more generous points. Sewanee men, never slackers, will not slack now. We shall do what we can, when we can, how we can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sewanee Alumni News, Vol. 7: November, 1940 Taking the figure as the total number of Sewanee alumni (there are actually many more), it can be readily seen that if each alumnus sent one new student to Sewanee every twenty years, the college would enroll 150 Freshmen each year and the total enrollment would be maintained at capacity level. The considerations that move a boy, or his parents, to choose a college are of course many and various. Advertis ing, publicity, direct-mail appeals, time ly visits by representatives - all have their value and all bring some results in new enrollment. But these agencies are limited in both scope and intensity. No matter how forceful they are, they lose much, often all, of their force when not backed up by steady, consistent personal effort. Only the alumnus, who knows the boy and is known by the boy, is in position to apply this per sonal effort effectively. Often the alum nus must take the place Of all student getting agencies combined, since it is impossible for any institution to get complete coverage in the matte'r of advertising, publicity, and so on. In any event, a college grows in propor tion as its alumni are enthusiastic and industrious in the promotion of new enrollment. Book Description
Excerpt from Sewanee Alumni News, 1944-1945, Vol. 10 The reviewer of Mr. Percy's poetry is not like a man watching a new planet swim into his ken. Mr. Percy died in January, 1943, and many of his poems, in various editions, have been before the public for some time. The publication of his collected poems in this admirable edition will bring his work to the attention of many new readers, and will please the old. It is also an occasion when the critic may fairly attempt to evaluate Mr. Percy's achievement in poetry. The first fact to be noted is that Mr. Percy was not a member of the school which. In our time has shown most originality and power. Unfriendly critics have charged that he manifests the weaknesses cf an outworn tradition; to read him after Eliot and his school would be like reading an imitator of Pope after Wordsworth. It cannot be denied that the intellectual and meta physical poetry of the modems presents a serious challenge to Mr. Percy. If the new school has really succeeded in creating the taste by which it is to be enjoyed, Mr. Percy's poetry, along with that of many romantics and Victorians, must sufler an eclipse. Whether this taste will be permanent is another matter. It is true, as a modern critic has reminded us, we cannot re-enter the Garden of Eden without feeling very foolish. But not even all mature lovers of poetry will be attracted only by the poetry of cognition that ignores and derides man's emotional life.
