A Translation and Interpretation of Horace’s Sermones, Book I
Author: Andy Law
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527567419
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 491
Book Description
Horace’s book of Sermones (also called Satires) was his first published work. Rather than a collection of satirical sideswipes, as the genre might have dictated, the book is a wiry, tight, muscular, interlaced hexameter artwork of enormous originality and as far removed from the legacy of satirical writing he inherited as one can imagine. It is the work of a 29-year-old grappling with issues of personal and poetic identity during one of the most important and pivotal times in European history. Geographically, socially and genetically an outsider, Horace earned himself a seat at Rome’s top creative table, close to the heart of the political engine that was to change Rome forever. His book details a transformational journey from ‘nobody’ to ‘somebody’, and is a simultaneous invention of poet and reinvention of poetic genre. Horace’s Sermones have floated in and out of fashion ever since they first appeared, regularly eclipsed by his Odes. Today, rehabilitated, they find space in the higher levels of the school curriculum. This book provides unique insights and will be of interest to all classicists, as well as students studying core influences on European literature.

Languages : en
Pages : 177
Book Description
The lectionary is a helpful homiletical tool. But there are times when lectionary preaching does not meet a congregation’s needs. Sermon Treks offers preachers and students an invigorating selection of new sermon-planning trails, for use as sermon series or for single sermons. The options presented here are practical and theologically responsible. Some are rooted in ancient forms of proclamation; others are new. All provide clear but creative guidance for the preacher, and a path that will lead to more effective sermons.

More than a Sermon
Author: Douglas D. Webster
Publisher: Lexham Press
ISBN: 1683597532
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
Preach with compassion and conviction In More than a Sermon, Douglas D. Webster highlights the prophetic and pastoral challenge of preaching today. The task is both harder and easier than we imagine, as we are called to proclaim the biblical text in a way that convicts a hostile world while encouraging our congregations to rest in Christ's love. We need preaching that both swings the hammer that breaks hard hearts yet does not break the bruised reeds in our care. Offering practical insights and examples, Webster explores what it means to preach the gospel in different seasons such as: Advent and Lent Memorial services and weddings Times of crisis or social impact More than a Sermon is a valuable resource for both new pastors and veteran preachers who want to proclaim the whole counsel of God with power and wisdom.

The Four Pages of the Sermon
Author: Paul Scott Wilson
Publisher: Abingdon Press
ISBN: 1426724713
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 278
Book Description
Doing justice to the complexity of the preaching task and the questions that underlie it, Wilson organizes both the preparation and the content of the sermon around its "four pages." Each "page" addresses a different theological and creative component of what happens in any sermon. Page One presents the trouble or conflict that takes place in or that underscores the biblical text itself. Page Two looks at similar conflict--sin or brokenness--in our own time. Page Three returns to the Bible to identify where God is at work in or behind the text--in other words, to discover the good news. Page Four points to God at work in our world, particularly in relation to the situations described in Page Two.
