Preaching after Easter: Mid-Pentecost, Ascension, and Pentecost in Late Antiquity
Author: Richard W. Bishop
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004315543
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 501
Book Description
The studies collected in Preaching after Easter examine the festal history and homiletics of Mid-Pentecost, Ascension, and Pentecost in the late antique Mediterranean world. Articles on individual sermons or the work of individual preachers such as John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Peter Chrysologus, Leo the Great, and Severus of Antioch exhibit the richness of late antique festal preaching. Questions of authenticity, heresiology, and theological, exegetical, or liturgical history are addressed with methodological rigor. Complementary contributions that deal with ancient Jewish-Christian dialogue, art-historical reception, and contemporary liturgical theology illustrate the wide ramifications of ancient Christian festal practice. Students and scholars of these feasts and the interpretive traditions devoted to them will find this volume to be an indispensable source of information and analysis.

Whispering the Lyrics
Author: Thomas G. Long
Publisher: CSS Publishing
ISBN: 0788004921
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 138
Book Description
Based on texts from the Revised Common and Catholic lectionaries, Thomas Long provides inspirational messages to motivate and help preachers through their most difficult preaching time of the year, the seasons of Lent and Easter. The road to Easter takes us through the most sacred stretch of the gospel story, and the narratives simply overwhelm us... Congregations who blithely assume that their pastor eagerly relishes the chance to preach the passion and resurrection of Jesus are, for the most part, mistaken. To be sure the pews are more crowded as Easter approaches, the choirs are well-rehearsed and in full voice, and an electric charge courses through the sanctuary, but the preacher stands there with the obligation to proclaim the truths of Jesus' death and resurrection, and it seems, at one and the same time, to be a set of claims too little to go on in a secular and cynical age and a range of mysteries too profound to speak. -- from author's foreword Thomas Long is Francis Landey Patton Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary and is one of the most well-known teachers of preachers in America. This is his second book published by CSS.

All Things New: Sermons for Easter and the Great Fifty Days
Author: Chris Matthis
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781798416662
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
This is my third collection of sermons published for posterity and my family's future edification. The sermons in this book are not listed chronologically but rather according to the lectionary. For nearly every Sunday in Easter, I provide one sermon each for series A, B, and C of the Lutheran Service Book lectionary published by the Commission on Worship of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (my denomination). Most times it aligns well with the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) used by most mainline Protestant churches in the United States. Where it differs, you will still be blessed, I hope, to read and meditate on God's Word.In addition to sermons for the Sundays of Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost, I include two funeral sermons, both for practical and sentimental reasons. My father, who was a pastor, always had a reputation of being good at a funeral. In fact, this is an area where all preachers must succeed because there are fewer times in life where Easter joy becomes the basis for real life hope than at the death of a Christian loved one. For if the ones we lose belong to Christ, they are never truly lost; we will see them again, either when we die or on the Last Day when Christ returns. Either way, when we see Jesus face to face, we will see our Christian loved ones again. As Jesus told Martha at Lazarus's funeral, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" I hope that you do, or at least that you might, after reading these messages of life and hope. Until the Day of Christ's second Advent, we are caught in the "now, not yet" reality of a fallen world into which the kingdom of God is already breaking in. Jesus came to make all things new (Rev. 21:5). To him be glory forever! Amen.

Hearers of the Word
Author: Kieran J O'Mahony
Publisher: Messenger Publications
ISBN: 1788123581
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
The growing hunger for the Word of God is an unexpected development in our time. This book sets out to nourish those who desire something deeper and richer than is possible in the usual setting of worship. By exploring the context and background to all three readings, the author hopes to make the readings available for personal prayer and as a preparation for taking part in the Sunday liturgy. A very useful resource for all who wish to get more out the Sunday readings. Fr Kieran is very well-known for his regular emailings of resources on the readings. These are hugely popular amongst clergy and others. Now, for the first time, these readings are brought together in a series of books. This is the third volume covering Easter Week to Pentecost.

Proclamation and Celebration
Author: Susan K. Hedahl
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1451418655
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 178
Book Description
"Proclamation and Celebration focuses homiletically on the six principal festivals of the church year: Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, and Holy Trinity. Central to the complicated development of lectionaries over the centuries, these festivals have anchored the church year, primarily because they are specifically enunciated in biblical materials.Susan Hedahl argues for the importance of viewing these festivals both as a unit and individually from a doctrinal perspective in light of the dynamic and theological expressions of God's lively relationship with humanity. Exploring the possibilities in the biblical narratives that ground each festival, Hedahl helps the preacher create sermons that find joyous resonance in the liturgical, spiritual, ecumenical, theological, cultural, and educational activities of congregational life. After an initial introduction to the festivals as a group, six chapters address each specific festival, describing the history, biblical texts, doctrines, cultural issues, and possibilities attendant on the festival. Throughout the book, Hedahl uses sermon excerpts by many preachers to illustrate strategies, choosing materials from a wide range of times, styles, and cultures" -- Publisher description.
