Book Description
Sentinel-1 is the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite of the EU's Copernicus program for Earth observation. Being a radar, it is very suitable for ship detection. Sentinel-1 produces routinely a large amount of images over the seas and coasts, in particular in Europe and the Arctic but also elsewhere on the globe. Up to now, software to analyse satellite SAR images for ship detection was limited to handle a few images at the time, so was not up to the high production volume of Sentinel-1. This report describes improvements in JRC's ship detector SUMO to fully automatically process large amounts of images. With this increased capability, time series of many months of Sentinel-1 images are analysed over two sites in the Arctic, revealing the seasonal relation between ship traffic and sea ice. Also a multi-month data set over the Mediterranean Sea, mapping the shipping patterns there, and a one-year data set over the Western Indian Ocean are analysed. The combination of the Sentinel-1 ship detections with ship positions derived from ship self-reporting systems (AIS and LRIT) results in the quantification and mapping of the non-reporting ship traffic, that is not seen on AIS or LRIT. Beyond mere detection, new methods are tested to estimate the size of the ships from their signature in the Sentinel-1 images, and to allow discrimination between tankers and cargo vessels even if they are of similar size. The occurrence of range ambiguities, and the impact of SAR imaging effects on the apparent heading of the ship signatures are briefly discussed. The developments and experiences discussed here should further promote Sentinel-1 in becoming a tool for maritime surveillance to the benefit of maritime safety, security and sustainability, including spatial planning.

Book Description
Sentinel-1 is the European Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operational since 3 October 2014. The SAR's characteristics should make it suitable for maritime surveillance (ship detection), and it will routinely collect a large amount of maritime imagery over European and global seas. After its launch in April 2014, preliminary data have been made available to limited users in the satellite's commissioning phase, and since the start of the operational phase data are available to the general public. These early data have been used to assess the quality of Sentinel-1 images and their suitability for ship detection. This was partly done by using the JRC's ship detection software SUMO, after adaptation to ingest and process Sentinel-1 data. It is found that the sensor lives up to its specifications, thereby making it very useful for maritime surveillance thanks to its combination of wide swath and low noise at the medium resolution with which it will mostly be operated ("IW" and "EW" modes).

Book Description
Information is always required by organizations of coastal states about the movements, identities and intentions of vessels sailing in the waters of interest to them, which may be coastal waters, straits, inland waterways, rivers, lakes or open seas. This interest may stem from defense requirements or from needs for the protection of off-shore resources, enhanced search and rescue services, deterrence of smuggling, drug trafficking and other illegal activities and/or for providing vessel traffic services for safe and efficient navigation and protection of the environment. To meet these needs it is necessary to have a well designed maritime surveillance and control system capable of tracking ships and providing other types of information required by a variety of user groups ranging from port authorities, shipping companies, marine exchanges to governments and the military. Principles of Integrated Maritime Surveillance Systems will be of vital interest to anyone responsible for the design, implementation or provision of a well designed maritime surveillance and control system capable of tracking ships and providing navigational and other types of information required for safe navigation and efficient commercial operation. Principles of Integrated Maritime Surveillance Systems is therefore essential to a variety of user groups ranging from port authorities to shipping companies and marine exchanges as well as civil governments and the military.

Book Description
The Committee has serious concerns following the decision in the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) to cancel the Nimrod MRA4 maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) programme. Although the MoD's own capability investigations have concluded that a MPA is the solution to the UK's maritime surveillance requirements over the next 20 years, the MoD has postponed any decision on a further MPA until at least the next SDSR in 2015. The MoD has acknowledged that the resultant capability gap cannot be completely covered by an existing single asset or collection of assets. The Committee is concerned that the MoD is sending mixed messages in respect of the need for a maritime patrol aircraft. On one hand it says that there is no requirement for such an aircraft and that it is not funded or in the programme but on the other hand it acknowledges that its absence is a risk and something may need to be done. The Committee is also concerned about the withdrawal of other maritime surveillance assets. However the report acknowledges the work the MoD has undertaken to explore the potential options for maritime surveillance in the longer term, such as unmanned systems, lighter-than-air vehicles and space technology. The report welcomes the establishment of the Maritime Security Oversight Group and the National Maritime Information Centre as first steps towards a more strategic and co-ordinated output and as a way of mitigating some of the capability gaps

Book Description
The oceans cover approximately 71% of Earth’s surface, 90% of the biosphere and contains 97% of Earth’s water. Since the first launch of SEASAT satellite in 1978, an increasing number of SAR satellites have or will become available, such as the European Space Agency’s ERS-1/-2, ENVISAT, and Sentinel-1 series; the Canadian RADARSAT-1/-2 and the upcoming RADARSAT Constellation Mission series satellites; the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellites, the German TERRASAR-X and TANDEM-X, and the Chinese GAOFEN-3 SAR, among others. Recently, European Space Agency has launched a new generation of SAR satellites, Sentinel-1A in 2014 and Sentinel-1B in 2016. These SAR satellites provide researchers with free and open SAR images necessary to carry out their research on the global oceans. The scope of Advances in SAR Remote Sensing of Oceans is to demonstrate the types of information that can be obtained from SAR images of the oceans, and the cutting-edge methods needed for analysing SAR images. Written by leading experts in the field, and divided into four sections, the book presents the basic principles of radar backscattering from the ocean surface; introduces the recent progresses in SAR remote sensing of dynamic coastal environment and management; discusses the state-of-the-art methods to monitor parameters or phenomena related to the dynamic ocean environment; and deals specifically with new techniques and findings of marine atmospheric boundary layer observations. Advances in SAR Remote Sensing of Oceans is a very comprehensive and up-to-date reference intended for use by graduate students, researchers, practitioners, and R&D engineers working in the vibrant field of oceans, interested to understand how SAR remote sensing can support oceanography research and applications.
