Book Description
Donald and Spider are back in the continuing saga of Semi-Terrestrial. Karen and Nate are along for the ride. The Earth has problems, Donald wants to fix them. Drought? Donald has a plan for that, but he needs assistance. Money is no issue. Karen and Nate are on top of that end of operations. Donald cannot turn to other humans for the kind of help that he requires. His reasons are complicated, but valid. Donald must enlist the help of extraterrestrial aliens that share the occupancy of Earth. He does not trust these aliens. These aliens do not trust him. It is the perfect recipe for efficient operation. However, the problems intensify, exponentially, when Donald’s efforts enrage an entire, separate species of extraterrestrial aliens…mean, flesh-eating aliens. Earth is doomed. Unless, Donald and Spider have another plan. Oh, I forgot to mention Bigfoot. Yes, Bigfoot. It seems that…well…you will see.

Book Description
Donald and Spider’s family operations are churning, fast and furiously. Nate has taken a distinct dislike to people on the internet who think they can say anything, with impunity. Silver can help with that. Karen does not like the filth on the internet. She is not too happy with the filth, in the American streets, either. Silver can help with that, also. Donna and Donnie have decided that it is time to make something of their lives. And why not? They will be two years old, soon. What should they do? Cure cancer? End the violence in America’s inner cities? Create a multi-billion-dollar business that lifts the residents of those inner cities out of poverty? Why not all of the above? Silver can help with that, as can the rest of their family team. The obstacles of city hall, the unions, organized crime, and, of course, other aliens, are no obstacles, at all, to Donald’s family. The opportunities are limitless, when Silver gains sentience. Spider says that is impossible for a machine to feel. Silver says that the word ‘impossible’ is no longer relevant. He may be correct.

Book Description
Donald and Spider’s family continues to grow. Their multiple, specialized operations continue onward and are doing great things. Not so great things for those in positions of power and those on the underbelly of society, but great for everyone else on the planet. When the twins, Donna and Donnie, take on the ambitious, impossible project of mapping the entire universe, the Waldheim family finds itself living off-world for a year. A lot can happen in a year. A lot does happen in a year. When the family returns to Earth, they discover a human population of less than three-hundred-million and that number is dropping, precipitously. No alien force, microbe, or world conflict has resulted in the deaths of the billions of humans. Something else is at work. The Greys and the Nordics are not going to be any help. It appears that they were the first to be killed. The family has to get to the bottom of things, rapidly. Throw in the Gospel according to Spider, a family operation combatting worldwide human trafficking, an addition of more Saskaç family members, a few kitten family members, and an unprovoked assault upon Donald’s Island by a military coalition of ten nations, and you have just another, business as usual, doing the impossible and making it look easy, romp for Donald’s family. Keep your arms and hands inside the car, at all times.

Book Description
The two volumes, LNCS 6686 resp. LNCS 6687, constitute the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Work-Conference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation, IWINAC 2011, held in La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain, in May/June 2011. The 108 revised full papers presented in LNCS 6686 resp. LNCS 6687 were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The first part, LNCS 6686, entitled "Foundations on Natural and Artificial Computation", includes all the contributions mainly related to the methodological, conceptual, formal, and experimental developments in the fields of neurophysiology and cognitive science. The second part, LNCS 6687, entitled "New Challenges on Bioinspired Applications", contains the papers related to bioinspired programming strategies and all the contributions related to the computational solutions to engineering problems in different application domains, specially Health applications, including the CYTED ``Artificial and Natural Computation for Health'' (CANS) research network papers.

Book Description
The theme of this book is the invasion of land by animal lines which originated in aquatic environments. It brings together physiological and ecological evidence to show both the likely routes taken out of the sea by the aquatic ancestors of terrestrial animals and the changes in structure and function associated with these routes. The author takes an ecophysiological approach, and by using representative examples, provides a novel background against which both the terrestrial adaptations of individual species and the make up and function of terrestrial ecosystems can be considered. Dr Little is the author of the highly acclaimed book The Colonisation of Land, which discusses the phylogeny and physiology of terrestrial and semi-terrestrial animals. The Terrestrial Invasion takes a fresh approach and provides an excellent introduction to the origins of land animals suitable for ecologists, physiologists and evolutionary biologists.

Book Description
Recently another book on insect physiology was published. It was restricted to a few focal points as are many of these new insect physiology books, but there was considerable depth in its specialized point of view. We were dis cussing the structure of this book and of insect physiology books, in general, when Prof. Remmert asked me " . . . and what about books on spider physio logy?" Silence. Then I started to explain "oh yes, there is a congress pro ceedings volume on this topic and there is a group with excellent publica tions on another topic . . . ", but I felt that this answer was weak. One can no longer buy the proceedings volume in a bookshop and to read a series of publications on a given topic one must search in a library for a dozen journals. Why is there not a single book on spider physiology comparable with the many books on insect physiology? Are spiders a scientific ivory tower, far from public interest and commercial importance? I do not think so, although spiders are one of the many "forgotten" animal groups which always grew in the shadow of the insects. There are research groups working on spider physiology, there are fascinating phenomena in this animal group and there are plenty of exciting results. Spiders may have been always underresearch ed, but research is progressing. In the last few years, new books have been published, e. g.

Book Description
The book traces the ways in which terrestrial animals have evolved from aquatic ancestors and discusses the means by which they are adapted to life on land. The most important physiological adaptations are those involving salt and water balance, the excretion of nitrogen, reproductive mechanisms and the sense organ and these are given priority. Evidence from fossil history is combined with that from the ecology and physiology of present-day species to assess the probable routes along which various evolutionary lines had moved on to land. Individual chapters are concerned with specific animal groups and emphasis is placed on comparisons of physiological mechanisms between closely related animals before attempting wider generalisations. The book closes with a brief account of the recolonisation of the sea and fresh waters by terrestrial animals.

Book Description
Logs, stones and the like provide an interesting interface between the damp depths of the soil and the drier open ground surface, offering refuges for a fascinating array of animals. The communities of organisms that live beneath them are little noticed and even less studied, yet the potential for ecological work here is great. Some of the animals are relatively large and frequently not difficult to find. They exhibit a wide range of lifestyles – from slow slugs or snails to very fast centipedes, from generalist to specialist feeders and from herbivores to carnivores. With chapters covering the cryptosphere environment, species groups, identification, guidelines and ideas for further research, this much-expanded and updated new edition also includes extensive, easy-to-use, comprehensively illustrated keys. Ground-surface debris can be found almost anywhere, often presenting highly accessible microhabitats for study and bringing immediate rewards to the curious: here is the ideal tool to unlock these worlds.
