Book Description
This thesis presents a closed-form, blind channel estimation scheme for Alamouti's and other orthogonal STBC. Unlike other blind channel estimation algorithms used in such systems, the scheme is able to estimate the channels, to within a phase constant, in multiple-input single-output systems, i.e. systems that employ only one receive antenna. The channel matrix is estimated from the eigenvalue decomposition of the fourth order cumulant matrix of the output signal. The performance of the scheme depends partly upon the accuracy of the estimated cumulants, and thus a scheme to improve the cumulant matrix estimate is suggested. Using these improved cumulants, the algorithm performs very well in slowly changing channel conditions. A single pilot-tuple is required to correctly assign the estimated to the actual channels and to resolve the phase ambiguity common to all blind estimators. The main disadvantage of the scheme is its higher complexity related to the estimation of higher order cumulants; this complexity can be reduced by exploiting the symmetry inherent in the cumulant matrix. Furthermore, it is shown that to achieve good performance in terms of bit error rate, 1000 sample points are sufficient to estimate the cumulant matrix.

Book Description
Space-time coding is a technique that promises greatly improved performance in wireless networks by using multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver. Space-Time Block Coding for Wireless Communications is an introduction to the theory of this technology. The authors develop the topic using a unified framework and cover a variety of topics ranging from information theory to performance analysis and state-of-the-art space-time coding methods for both flat and frequency-selective fading multiple-antenna channels. The authors concentrate on key principles rather than specific practical applications, and present the material in a concise and accessible manner. Their treatment reviews the fundamental aspects of multiple-input, multiple output communication theory, and guides the reader through a number of topics at the forefront of current research and development. The book includes homework exercises and is aimed at graduate students and researchers working on wireless communications, as well as practitioners in the wireless industry.

Book Description
In multiplicative fading channels, the commonly used symmetric signal constellations and space-time block codes cause ambiguities since joint channel estimation and data detection (CE/DD) schemes cannot differentiate certain sequences of symbols in single-input single-output (SISO) systems and certain sequences of space-time block codewords in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This phenomenon; known as isometry; leads to irreducible estimation and detection error floors. Since the channel state has to be estimated in most practical communications systems, isometry degrades the performances of such systems. This thesis introduces a unifying framework that effectively eliminates isometry by using asymmetric modulation schemes: one algorithm is proposed to construct asymmetric signal constellations to solve isometry in SISO systems, two algorithms are proposed to construct asymmetric space-time block codes (STBCs) to mitigate isometry. To further improve the estimation and detection performances of CE/DD schemes, a self-matching STBC is proposed in this thesis. The self-matching STBC improves detection performance by adapting its code properties according to the estimation error calculated by the Kalman recursion; by improving estimation performance using embedded training, and by breaking isometry with asymmetry. These asymmetric modulation schemes are shown in this thesis, both analytically and via simulations, to be novel, simple, effective and robust solutions to isometry.
