A process which computes the physical locations of nodes in a wireless sensor network is called localization. Self-localization is critical for large-scale sensor networks because manual or assisted localization is often impractical due to time requirements, economic constraints or inherent limitations of deployment scenarios. We have developed a service for reliably localizing wireless sensor networks in environments conducive to ranging errors by using a custom hardware-software solution for acoustic ranging and a family of self-localization algorithms. The ranging solution improves on previous work, extending the practical measurement range threefold "20-30m" while maintaining a distance-invariant median measurement error of about 1% of maximum range "33cm". The localization scheme is based on least squares scaling with soft constraints. Evaluation using ranging results obtained from sensor network field experiments shows that the localization scheme is resilient against large-magnitude ranging errors and sparse range measurements, both of which are common in large-scale outdoor sensor network deployments.

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed of low-cost, low-power, multifunctional, tiny sensor nodes that scattered in one area and can collect physical information, process and forward them to sink nodes which act as data collectors. Sensors exhibit self-configuring and self-organizing capabilities and can be deployed densely and randomly without predetermining their positions. Localization has been a major challenge in wireless sensor networks because without finding the position of the sensor that is reporting sensed data, the data reported will not be useful. However, most of the previous localization approaches demand that sensors have plenty of resources like power, memory, or extra hardware used for ranging. In this thesis we propose a new Hybrid Distance Vector based localization algorithm, referred to as HDV-Hop, that accurately localizes sensors while minimizing their power consumption and memory requirements, and without depending on any extra hardware. HDV-Hop splits the task of localization between sensor nodes and the base station (i.e., sink). Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not necessitate the presence of many nodes with preconfigured positions, or anchor nodes. In HDV-Hop, anchors are placed in a circle or a semi-circle around the perimeter of the WSN. Not only this placement strategy leads to more accurate localization, but also it is very convenient for WSNs used for environment monitoring or military surveillance or tracking applications. Using NS-2 and MATLAB simulations, we have shown that the proposed HDV-Hop outperforms other peer approaches in terms of localization accuracy and power efficiency.

In modern wireless sensor networks (WSN) applications, location awareness has been one of the features that attracted many research interests. Various applications utilize location information for surveillance and asset tracking purposes. Common WSN localization systems use radio frequency (RF), ultra-sound, or laser devices to provide range information, whose node positions are to be determined by various algorithms accordingly. Multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) is one of the most common algorithms for transforming inter-node distances into node positions in Cartesian coordinates. However, MDS algorithm, by nature, has a cubic computational complexity. Also, the algorithm's ability to localize is restricted to fully connected WSNs, where every node sees every other node. This thesis proposes a low-cost pure RF based localization system, implemented with a novel clustering MDS algorithm. Its most attractive feature is its ability to localize a partially connected WSN with a linear computation complexity without sacrificing the localization accuracy. In this thesis, we review various localization techniques and conduct experiments to compare the clustering MDS' performance against the classical MDS' and GPS'. The localization with a commercial GPS, although, better than the above two methods, has also introduced significant discrepancy. At the end, we have demonstrated that RF localization in our low-cost system does not deliver GPS-grade accuracy, but its ability to localize partially-connected WSN and low computation complexity have outperformed the classical MDS approach.
