Book Description
ABSTRACT: The goals of this research were to design a reconfigurable multi-node wireless communication testbed; to implement collaborative reception techniques into the testbed; to show the usefulness of the testbed by gaining a better understanding of the collaborative techniques and how these techniques may be optimized; and to verify that collaborative reception can improve the receive capabilities of a real-life wireless network. The design of the testbed must be as general as possible, to allow experimental evaluation of different communication techniques and higher layer protocols.

Book Description
This thesis introduces some improvements to the robotic testbed in the Robotics Laboratory in the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The main goal was to improve the wireless network. Not only this goal was successfully achieved, but the complete tesbed was also improved with the introduction of new hardware and software. The challenges of this research were twofold: first, it was necessary to keep functionality of the previous platform, and second, it was desired to maximize the performance of the new system. The legacy serial port used in the existing platform presents a serious constraint in terms of the performance of the system. Two main implementations are proposed: The first one is completely 0́−transparent0́+ to the user, meaning that the experiments can be run without the user noticing any change. This implementation can be used even with the same software that is running currently. The second implementation changes the serial port at the side of the control computer with a more efficient Ethernet port. This implementation demands a change of software in the control computer. This software was made in Labview and was developed to allow the same functionality as before but with improved communication performance. The system achieved should not be considered merely as an improvement in wireless communications. Rather, it is a new logical layer introduced between the control computer and the robots, which will diversify enormously the experiments that can be performed in this new testbed.

Book Description
This book is the sixth volume of the successful book series on Robot Operating System: The Complete Reference. The objective of the book is to provide the reader with comprehensive coverage of the Robot Operating Systems (ROS) and the latest trends and contributed systems. ROS is currently considered as the primary development framework for robotics applications. There are seven chapters organized into three parts. Part I presents two chapters on the emerging ROS 2.0 framework; in particular, ROS 2.0 is become increasingly mature to be integrated into the industry. The first chapter from Amazon AWS deals with the challenges that ROS 2 developers will face as they transition their system to be commercial-grade. The second chapter deals with reactive programming for both ROS1 and ROS. In Part II, two chapters deal with advanced robotics, namely on the usage of robots in farms, and the second deals with platooning systems. Part III provides three chapters on ROS navigation. The first chapter deals with the use of deep learning for ROS navigation. The second chapter presents a detailed tuning guide on ROS navigation and the last chapter discusses SLAM for ROS applications. I believe that this book is a valuable companion for ROS users and developers to learn more ROS capabilities and features.

Book Description
Over the last twenty years, automation and robotics have played an increasingly important role in a variety of application domains including manufacturing, hazardous environments, defense, and service industries. Space is a unique environment where power, communications, atmospheric, gravitational, and sensing conditions impose harsh constraints on the ability of both man and machines to function productively. In this environment, intelligent automation and robotics are essential complements to the capabilities of humans. In the development of the United States Space Program, robotic manipulation systems have increased in importance as the complexity of space missions has grown. Future missions will require the construction, maintenance, and repair of large structures, such as the space station. This volume presents the effords of several groups that are working on robotic solutions to this problem. Much of the work in this book is related to assembly in space, and especially in-orbit assembly of large truss structures. Many of these so-called truss structures will be assembled in orbit. It is expected that robot manipulators will be used exclusively, or at least provide partial assistance to humans. Intelligent Robotic Systems for Space Exploration provides detailed algorithms and analysis for assembly of truss structure in space. It reports on actual implementations to date done at NASA's Langley Research Center. The Johnson Space Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Other implementations and research done at Rensselaer are also reported. Analysis of robot control problems that are unique to a zero-gravity environment are presented.

Book Description
The Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted much attention from society, industry and academia as a promising technology that can enhance day to day activities, and the creation of new business models, products and services, and serve as a broad source of research topics and ideas. A future digital society is envisioned, composed of numerous wireless connected sensors and devices. Driven by huge demand, the massive IoT (mIoT) or massive machine type communication (mMTC) has been identified as one of the three main communication scenarios for 5G. In addition to connectivity, computing and storage and data management are also long-standing issues for low-cost devices and sensors. The book is a collection of outstanding technical research and industrial papers covering new research results, with a wide range of features within the 5G-and-beyond framework. It provides a range of discussions of the major research challenges and achievements within this topic.

Book Description
As a new strategy to realize the goal of flexible, robust, fault-tolerant robotic systems, the distributed autonomous approach has quickly established itself as one of the fastest growing fields in robotics. This book is one of the first to devote itself solely to this exciting area of research, covering such topics as self-organization, communication and coordination, multi-robot manipulation and control, distributed system design, distributed sensing, intelligent manufacturing systems, and group behavior. The fundamental technologies and system architectures of distributed autonomous robotic systems are expounded in detail, along with the latest research findings. This book should prove indispensable not only to those involved with robotic engineering but also to those in the fields of artificial intelligence, self-organizing systems, and coordinated control.
