The first edition of this dictionary was published in 1964, and the revised second edition appeared in 1968. Since then electrical engineering has made great progress and has enlarged rapidly along with its associated fields. Accordingly, the terms required for electrical engineering have greatly increased. Therefore the publishers, Ohmsha, Ltd. decided to publish this extensively revised and enlarged third edition. The original editor, Dr. Yuichi Ishibashi, who is my father, devoted great energy to compiling revisions after the appearance of the second edition, but he passed away in 1969 leaving his work in the form of a mass of manuscript cards. Since my speciality is the same as my father's, Mr. Sato, the managing director of Ohmsha, Ltd. approached me with his request to compile this third edition, to which I agreed to bring my father's efforts to fruition. Following the trend of the first and second editions, in addition to the customary technical terms of electrical engineering, electronics, and communications, this third edition attempts to include relevant terms from the basic sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as from automation, data processing, instrumentation, nucleonics, mechanical engineer ing, civil engineering, architecture and economics. Also I have tried to include as many verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that appear frequently in general engineering literature as possible. The result is that this third edition contains over 42,000 vocabulary entries.

In the 1980s, sensational stories about an 'emerging new middle class' popped up simultaneously in the streets of Jakarta and at conferences of hopeful Indonesia watchers. Businesspeople and professionals had profited from President Suharto's rapid economic success, and were allegedly eager to not only to show off their new wealth, but to boost democratization processes as well. They and their families were the vanguard of a category of Jakartans who regarded themselves boldly as the ‘normal, modern, educated middle class’ of Indonesia—against the background of a profound and state-induced depoliticization. Apart from fostering a new consumer culture, the new middle class was at the root of the expansion of the conurbation Jabotabek, housing hundreds of thousands of newly arrived middle-class members. Meanwhile, a new and huge gap between rich and poor became conspicuously visible in Jakarta. During the 1990s, the increasing political instability of the New Order government and the Asian monetary crisis led to the dramatic resignation of President Suharto in May 1998. In this study, based on extensive anthropological fieldwork throughout the 1990s, this new middle class is examined as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Despite a global orientation and a taste for democracy, its members seemed to have internalized the New Order along with some lingering late-colonial notions as their guidelines for life. How ‘new’ was the new middle class anyway? Lifestyle and material culture practices in the suburb of Bintaro Raya—in public space as well as in the intimacy of living rooms—illustrate the everyday ambiguity of people who appear to be trapped in their imagined middle-classness: they were ‘lost in mall’.

This thesis deals with the concept and consequences of marketization in the nonprofit sector. Marketization describes the process of nonprofit organizations becoming more business-like and is caused, among other things, by increased competition for scarce resources, the rise of professionalism, and calls for more transparency and efficiency by funders and the public. Research about marketization is inconclusive; some researchers believe marketization can increase not only efficiency, but also effectiveness of organizations, while others fear that nonprofits lose their focus on a social mission. The four articles presented in this thesis focus on the theoretical and practical implications of nonprofits relying more on earned income, a dominant feature of marketization, and nonprofits actively and passively adopting management practices and tools from the for-profit sector, another key characteristic of increased marketization. The results show that marketization can increase the economic and social performance of an organization, and, when handled well and implemented through a clear strategic focus, foster mission achievement. Particularly the focus on beneficiaries and internal processes can help organizations to better fulfill their mission. A loss of focus on the mission must be feared if regulatory forces act on the organization without a simultaneous professionalization of management, or if an organization focuses too much on its competitors.
