Book Description
The Book of Jasher, a lost book of the Bible comprising ninety-one chapters, is presented here complete in the celebrated 1840 English translation by Moses Samuel. Referenced twice in the New Testament scripture - once in Joshua and once in Second Samuel - the Book of Jasher is also known as the Sefer haYashar or the Book of the Upright. Its contents are wide-ranging; the creation of Man and the story of Adam and Eve, and the descendants of Noah comprise part of the text. The testing of Abraham by God also features, while Abraham's dialogue is notably expanded far beyond what is said in the Hebrew Bible. The text has gained a great following since its translation to English in the mid-19th century. The Church of Latter-Day Saints founder Joseph Smith praised its detail, noting the book's elaboration on the condition of the Earth following the Great Flood.

Book Description
The Sefer haYashar (first edition 1552) is a Hebrew midrash also known as the Toledot Adam and Dibre ha-Yamim be-'Aruk. The Hebrew title may be translated Sefer haYashar - "Book of the Upright" - but it is known in English translation mostly as The Book of Jasher following English tradition. The book is named after the Book of Jasher mentioned in Joshua and 2 Samuel. Although it is presented as the original "Book of Jasher" in the translations such as that of Moses Samuel (1840), it is not accepted as such in rabbinical Judaism, nor does the original Hebrew text make such a claim. It should not be confused with the very different Book of Jasher (Pseudo-Jasher) printed by Jacob Ilive in 1751, which claimed to have been translated by the English monk Alcuin.

Book Description
The Sefer haYashar is an early modern Hebrew midrash also known as the Toledot Adam and Dibre ha-Yamim be-'Aruk. It is generally known in English translation as The Book of Jasher. The book is named after the Book of Jasher mentioned in Joshua and 2 Samuel. Although represented in the English translation reproduced here-that of Moses Samuel in 1840-as the genuine Book of Jasher mentioned in the Bible, there is general scholarly consensus that it is a late compilation of Jewish legends, probably written in Naples in the early 1500s. An unsigned editorial in the Times and Seasons quoted the work approvingly; as Joseph Smith was the editor at the time, the editorial came to be attributed to him and as a result the work has been held as genuine by some Latter-day Saints. LDS scholars, however, hold with mainstream scholarship regarding its authenticity. It is, nonetheless, interesting as an alternate perspective on Biblical events, and for its impact (however minor) on LDS thought. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Book Description
They have... books with these terrible, awe-inspiring Names... they know that the use of these mysterious Names, without due and careful preparation, brings with it calamity and premature death. -from the introduction How much ancient wisdom was lost in the medieval years! here laments Moses Gaster, one of the most prominent Jewish theologians and folklorists of the late 19th century. In 1896, he translated a fragmentary relic of Gnostic literature, a manuscript concerned with the many secret names of God believed by Kabbalists to wield enormous magical power, but in the discussion that here precedes the translation, Gaster acknowledges that this document only hints at the texts that may be lost forever. It remains a tantalizing peek into archaic occult mysteries. Jewish scholar MOSES GASTER (1856-1939) was born in Romania but emigrated to England, where he lectured at Oxford University. His wrote numerous books of theology, folklore, history, and literature, including History of Rumanian Popular Literature (1883) and five-volume Sephardic prayer book (1901-6).

Book Description
There was no person by the name of Jasher. The name "The Book of Jasher" is an English translation of the Hebrew title Sefer haYashar, which means "The Book of the Just." The Book of Jasher it is not divine Scripture. However, it is an ancient work which is valuable for the history of Biblical times. The Book of Jasher covers the material found in Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua, yet provides significant additional historical information, and goes into great detail about the life and times of Joseph. The Book of Jasher is mentioned twice in the Bible. 2 Samuel 2:18. "He instructed that the people should be taught the bow. Look! This is written in the Book of Jasher." (Book of the Just.) Joshua 10:13. "The Sun stood still, and the Moon stayed until the people had avenged themselves on their enemies. This is recorded in the Book of Jasher." (Book of the Just.) 2 Timothy 3:8 states, "And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men who have distorted minds and are disqualified in the faith also oppose the truth." Jannes and Jambres are mentioned in the Book of Jasher as the magicians who opposed Moses in the presence of Pharaoh. However, Jannes and Jambres are not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. The Book of Jasher is accepted as authentic by some scholars of The Latter-Day Saints.
