Book Description
Excerpt from Searchings in the Silence: A Series of Devotional Meditations BY the title Searchings in the Silence I have meant to express the fact that these brief meditations are designed for the stray moments of solitude in which the heart looks in upon itself. No attempt has been made either at uniformity of size or uniformity of manner. I have tried to strike chords of experience, as many and as varied as I have felt within myself. The little book has had long and earnest study. I would like it to be devotional, not'by the absence of thought, but by the flashing of suggestion. I would like it to be some small help, not only to the toilers on life's beaten way, but, if possible, even to one or two of that large class who require to preach on the Sundays. If these endeavours have proved a failure, the only excuse which can be pleaded is that the strength of the arm has not been equal to the height of the aim. Book Description
George Matheson discusses topics pertinent to the human spirit, from the pursuit of truth to the emotions, wants and virtues of a good Christian. Comprised of short chapters, this work intends to offer interested Christians an accessible way to contemplate spiritual topics. Each of the author's searchings penetrate the silence of God, shedding light upon the great questions important to all faithful. Readers will conclude each chapter thoughtful and informed. Of particular interest to the author is the character and deeds of the Lord Jesus Christ. The personhood of Jesus, and the example He left for all humanity receives much discussion. Matheson, using his experience as a preacher and hymn writer, is able to answer the anxieties of the reader and offer clarity and insight. The 95 meditations that constitute this book are each prefaced by a Biblical quotation. This verse of scripture serves as the theme for Matheson's messages and advice, and his knowledge of Biblical history, are amply demonstrated.

Book Description
This pioneering study of Christian sun symbolism describes how biblical light motifs were taken up with energy in the early Church. Kevin Duffy argues that, living in a world of 24/7 illumination, we need to reconnect with the sun and its light to appreciate the meaning of light in the Bible and Christian tradition. With such a retrieval we can appreciate Pope Francis's insistence that, like the moon, the Church does not shine with its own light, and assess the claim that the Eucharist is to be celebrated 'Ad Orientem', that is towards the rising sun in the East. Liturgy, architecture, poetry and the writings of saints and theologians such as Augustine, Hildegard of Bingen, Francis of Assisi, and Thomas Traherne offer abundant resources for a much needed ressourcement. While Christ was preached as the True Sun among sun-worshipping Aztecs, and the consecrated host was placed in a solar monstrance on Baroque altars, in the modern era solar themes have been neglected. In this accessible work, the author suggests that we rebalance a spiritual symbolism that has over-emphasised darkness and cloud at the expense of light and sun. He proposes a creative retrieval of the traditional title of Christ as the Sun of Justice. This title blends the personal, the social and the cosmic/ecological, and speaks powerfully to a secularising era that contemporaries Friedrich Nietzsche and Thérèse of Lisieux both described as one where the sun does not shine.
