Book Description
From one of the 20th century’s most profound philosophers and writers, comes a thought provoking essay that seeks to reconcile Marxism with existentialism. Exploring the complicated relationship the two philosophical schools of thought have with one another, Sartre supposes that the two are in fact compatible and complimentary towards one another, with poignant analysis and reasoning. An important work of modern philosophy, Search for a Method has a major influence on the current perceptions of existentialism and Marxism. “This is the most important philosophical work by Sartre to be translated since Being and Nothingness.”—James Collings, America
Search for a Method
Optimization by the Pattern Search Method
Author: Ralph F. Green
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Mathematical analysis
Languages : en
Pages : 82
Book Description
An infinite number of mathematical models can be created to describe naturally occurring physical systems. In addition there is a smaller, but large, number of criteria which can be used to measure the goodness of fit of a model to a physical process. Together, a selected criterion and a mathematical model define an objective function to be optimized.

A Derivative-free Two Level Random Search Method for Unconstrained Optimization
Author: Neculai Andrei
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030685179
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics, computer science, and operational research. The book presents a new derivative-free optimization method/algorithm based on randomly generated trial points in specified domains and where the best ones are selected at each iteration by using a number of rules. This method is different from many other well established methods presented in the literature and proves to be competitive for solving many unconstrained optimization problems with different structures and complexities, with a relative large number of variables. Intensive numerical experiments with 140 unconstrained optimization problems, with up to 500 variables, have shown that this approach is efficient and robust. Structured into 4 chapters, Chapter 1 is introductory. Chapter 2 is dedicated to presenting a two level derivative-free random search method for unconstrained optimization. It is assumed that the minimizing function is continuous, lower bounded and its minimum value is known. Chapter 3 proves the convergence of the algorithm. In Chapter 4, the numerical performances of the algorithm are shown for solving 140 unconstrained optimization problems, out of which 16 are real applications. This shows that the optimization process has two phases: the reduction phase and the stalling one. Finally, the performances of the algorithm for solving a number of 30 large-scale unconstrained optimization problems up to 500 variables are presented. These numerical results show that this approach based on the two level random search method for unconstrained optimization is able to solve a large diversity of problems with different structures and complexities. There are a number of open problems which refer to the following aspects: the selection of the number of trial or the number of the local trial points, the selection of the bounds of the domains where the trial points and the local trial points are randomly generated and a criterion for initiating the line search.

Index and Query Methods in Road Networks
Author: Jun Feng
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319107895
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
This book presents the index and query techniques on road network and moving objects which are limited to road network. Here, the road network of non-Euclidean space has its unique characteristics such that two moving objects may be very close in a straight line distance. The index used in two-dimensional Euclidean space is not always appropriate for moving objects on road network. Therefore, the index structure needs to be improved in order to obtain suitable indexing methods, explore the shortest path and acquire nearest neighbor query and aggregation query methods under the new index structures. Chapter 1 of this book introduces the present situation of intelligent traffic and index in road network, Chapter 2 introduces the relevant existing spatial indexing methods. Chapter 3-5 focus on several issues of road network and query, they involves: traffic road network models (see Chapter 3), index structures (see Chapter 4) and aggregate query methods (see Chapter 5). Finally, in Chapter 6, the book briefly describes the applications and the development of intelligent transportation in the future.

The Good Life Method
Author: Meghan Sullivan
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1984880314
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
Two Philosophers Ask and Answer the Big Questions About the Search for Faith and Happiness For seekers of all stripes, philosophy is timeless self-care. Notre Dame philosophy professors Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko have reinvigorated this tradition in their wildly popular and influential undergraduate course “God and the Good Life,” in which they wrestle with the big questions about how to live and what makes life meaningful. Now they invite us into the classroom to work through issues like what justifies our beliefs, whether we should practice a religion and what sacrifices we should make for others—as well as to investigate what figures such as Aristotle, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Iris Murdoch, and W. E. B. Du Bois have to say about how to live well. Sullivan and Blaschko do the timeless work of philosophy using real-world case studies that explore love, finance, truth, and more. In so doing, they push us to escape our own caves, ask stronger questions, explain our deepest goals, and wrestle with suffering, the nature of death, and the existence of God. Philosophers know that our “good life plan” is one that we as individuals need to be constantly and actively writing to achieve some meaningful control and sense of purpose even if the world keeps throwing surprises our way. For at least the past 2,500 years, philosophers have taught that goal-seeking is an essential part of what it is to be human—and crucially that we could find our own good life by asking better questions of ourselves and of one another. This virtue ethics approach resonates profoundly in our own moment. The Good Life Method is a winning guide to tackling the big questions of being human with the wisdom of the ages.

Fuzzy Optimization, Decision-making and Operations Research
Author: Chiranjibe Jana
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031356683
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 753
Book Description
After developing fuzzy set theory, many contributors focused their research on the extension of fuzzy sets and their computational methodologies, strengthening modern science and technology. In some real-life phenomena, the conventional methods and traditional fuzzy sets cannot be explained, whereas the extension of fuzzy sets and effective new computing methods can explain it adequately. This edited book presents a new view of fuzzy set-measurement methods entitled "Fuzzy Optimization, Decision Making and Operations Research: Theory and Applications", which deals with different perspectives and areas of research. All chapters are divided into three parts: fuzzy optimization, fuzzy decision-making, and fuzzy operation research. The goal of this book is to provide a relevant methodological framework covering the core fields of fuzzy decision-making method, fuzzy optimization method, fuzzy graphics method, fuzzy operations research, fuzzy optimization using graph theory, fuzzy support systems and its real and industrial applications. For many people, fuzzy words' industrial engineering and scientific meanings are still an advanced system for improving modern science and technology. Although fuzzy logic can be applied to many different areas, people do not know how different fuzzy approaches can be applied to various products currently on the market. It is written for professionals who wish to share their expertise, improve their findings, and provide relevant information in the fields of fuzzy methods and their application in decision-making, optimization theory, graph theory and operations research. This book is aimed at experts and practitioners in the fields of fuzzy optimization, fuzzy decision-making, and fuzzy operation research.
