Book Description
Excerpt from Scripture Proofs and Scriptural Illustrations of Unitarianism Holy Ghost, are merely relative - that the persons in the Trinity did not exist under these characters from all eter nity - that there is no precedence amongst them, either in time, order, or dignity. Others, whose professed standard is the creed attributed to Athanasius, believe that the Father, whom they designate the first person in the God head, is alone the Source or Fountain of the Deity; that the Son, who, according to them, is the second person, was begotten Of the Father and that the Holy Ghost, the third person, proceeded from the Father and the Son and yet that these three persons are co-equal, co-essential, and cc eternal. Some, again, have been Of opinion, that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, are not three persons, but three modes, characters, or relations; and that only one and the same agent is meant by the sacred writers, whether they treat Of the Father, the Son, or the Spirit: while, on the other hand, some have employed language concerning the three persons in the Godhead, unequivocally expressing the notion Of three distinct Gods. The maintainers Of these different opinions agree, that Christ was perfect man, as well as perfect God; and they are generally distinguished by the appellation Of trinitarians, but sometimes called, according to their peculiar views, Athanasians Sabellians, or Nominalists Tritheists, or believers in three distinct, infinite minds, or intelligences. Book Description
Excerpt from Scripture Proofs and Scriptural Illustrations of Unitarianism: With an Examination of the Alleged Biblical Evidence for the Doctrine of a Triune God, the Proper Diety of Christ, and the Divine Personality of the Holy Spirit, Distinct From the Father The following Work was originally written in very small bounds, and adapted chiefly for the instruction and convenience of the Writer; being designed to exhibit an illustrative view of the real or supposed Scripture evidence for the leading doctrines of Unitarianism and Trinitarianism. In pursuance of this scheme, be divided the left-hand page of his little paper-book into two columns: the first of which was intended to contain the passages of Scripture usually adduced in support of the doctrine of the Trinity and the Deity of Christ; and the second to include those texts which either establish the strict Unity of God the absolute Supremacy of the Father, or which, on Unitarian principles, illustrate the texts supposed to countenance Trinitarianism. All these portions of the Bible were merely referred to; and the corresponding or right-hand page was reserved for a few very brief observations. By the suggestion of a respected friend, who thought that a work pub lished in that form would be serviceable to the cause of Christian truth, the Author undertook to extend his plan; and accordingly, instead of merely noting the texts, and making some unimportant remarks, he has quoted the principal passages, enlarged his observations, and extracted from the writings of various eminent men those explanations and critical remarks which be conceived to be the most appropriate or valuable, accompanied with various readings and different translations of disputed passages of Scripture; besides further extending his original plan, by the addition of an entirely new part, consisting of the Biblical evidence for the distinguishing doctrines of Unitarianism. Lost Christianities
Author: Bart D. Ehrman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199756686
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
The early Christian Church was a chaos of contending beliefs. Some groups of Christians claimed that there was not one God but two or twelve or thirty. Some believed that the world had not been created by God but by a lesser, ignorant deity. Certain sects maintained that Jesus was human but not divine, while others said he was divine but not human. In Lost Christianities, Bart D. Ehrman offers a fascinating look at these early forms of Christianity and shows how they came to be suppressed, reformed, or forgotten. All of these groups insisted that they upheld the teachings of Jesus and his apostles, and they all possessed writings that bore out their claims, books reputedly produced by Jesus's own followers. Modern archaeological work has recovered a number of key texts, and as Ehrman shows, these spectacular discoveries reveal religious diversity that says much about the ways in which history gets written by the winners. Ehrman's discussion ranges from considerations of various "lost scriptures"--including forged gospels supposedly written by Simon Peter, Jesus's closest disciple, and Judas Thomas, Jesus's alleged twin brother--to the disparate beliefs of such groups as the Jewish-Christian Ebionites, the anti-Jewish Marcionites, and various "Gnostic" sects. Ehrman examines in depth the battles that raged between "proto-orthodox Christians"--those who eventually compiled the canonical books of the New Testament and standardized Christian belief--and the groups they denounced as heretics and ultimately overcame. Scrupulously researched and lucidly written, Lost Christianities is an eye-opening account of politics, power, and the clash of ideas among Christians in the decades before one group came to see its views prevail.
