Book Description
Did you know that Pocahontas probably never fell in love with John Smith, as the Disney and other film versions of those events pretend? That Godzilla was originally an anti-American and anti-nuclear movie, heavily cut and supplemented with new material? That Zorro was not created by an American author but derived from the much older Mexican struggle for independence? That Anna and the King was largely invented? That the myth of the sexually eager Hula girls is based on misunderstandings by the first explorers? That Black Hawk Down and many other war movies were censored and indirectly subsidized by the Pentagon? Screening Difference takes us on a fascinating voyage through major movie blockbusters that deal with the encounter between "us," based on white Hollywood, and "them," the filmic representations of other races, ethnicities, and cultures. Looking at subtle orientations in casting and make-up, sets and props, lighting and camera movements, music and language, this lively book follows the best-known genres and subgenres: from animated cartoons to wilderness films, from romantic movies to colonial adventures. Screening Difference tracks the stories back to their origins and patiently dissects the hidden messages that have gradually crept into them.

Book Description
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) was set up by Congress in 1990 to compensate people who have been diagnosed with specified cancers and chronic diseases that could have resulted from exposure to nuclear-weapons tests at various U.S. test sites. Eligible claimants include civilian onsite participants, downwinders who lived in areas currently designated by RECA, and uranium workers and ore transporters who meet specified residence or exposure criteria. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which oversees the screening, education, and referral services program for RECA populations, asked the National Academies to review its program and assess whether new scientific information could be used to improve its program and determine if additional populations or geographic areas should be covered under RECA. The report recommends Congress should establish a new science-based process using a method called "probability of causation/assigned share" (PC/AS) to determine eligibility for compensation. Because fallout may have been higher for people outside RECA-designated areas, the new PC/AS process should apply to all residents of the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, and overseas US territories who have been diagnosed with specific RECA-compensable diseases and who may have been exposed, even in utero, to radiation from U.S. nuclear-weapons testing fallout. However, because the risks of radiation-induced disease are generally low at the exposure levels of concern in RECA populations, in most cases it is unlikely that exposure to radioactive fallout was a substantial contributing cause of cancer.

Book Description
A state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary approach to cancer and aging With the majority of cancers occurring in individuals over the age of 65 against a backdrop of an expanding aging population, there is an urgent need to integrate the areas of clinical oncology and geriatric care. This timely work tackles these issues head-on, presenting a truly multidisciplinary and international perspective on cancer and aging from world-renowned experts in geriatrics, oncology, behavioral science, psychology, gerontology, and public health. Unlike other books on geriatric oncology that focus mainly on treatment, Cancer and Aging Handbook: Research and Practice examines all phases of the cancer care continuum, from prevention through evidence-based diagnosis and treatment to end-of-life care. Detailed clinical and research information helps guide readers on effective patient care as well as caregiver training, research, and intervention. Coverage includes: Epidemiology of cancer in older adults, plus the unique physical, mental, and social issues involved Strategies and guidelines for prevention, screening, and treatment of older individuals with cancer The most common cancers in the elderly, including breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, and ovarian cancer Cancer survivorship in older adults as well as the all-critical issues of palliative care and pain management Emerging topics such as caregiver and family issues, different models of care, and cost considerations An essential resource for clinicians and caregivers as well as researchers interested in this evolving field, Cancer and Aging Handbook is also useful for public health professionals and policymakers who need to formulate services and allocate resources for the growing population of older cancer patients.
