Book Description
Is our Greek and Roman heritage merely allusive and illusory? Or were our founders, and so our republican beginnings, truly steeped in the stuff of antiquity? So far largely a matter of generalization and speculation, the influence of Greek and Roman authors on our American forefathers finally becomes clear in this fascinating book-the first comprehensive study of the founders’ classical reading. Carl J. Richard begins by examining how eighteenth-century social institutions in general and the educational system in particular conditioned the founders to venerate the classics. He then explores the founders’ various uses of classical symbolism, models, “antimodels,” mixed government theory, pastoralism, and philosophy, revealing in detail the formative influence exerted by the classics, both directly and through the mediation of Whig and American perspectives. In this analysis, we see how the classics not only supplied the principal basis for the U.S. Constitution but also contributed to the founders’ conception of human nature, their understanding of virtue, and their sense of identity and purpose within a grand universal scheme. At the same time, we learn how the classics inspired obsessive fear of conspiracies against liberty, which poisoned relations between Federalists and Republicans. The shrewd ancients who molded Western civilization still have much to teach us, Richard suggests. His account of the critical role they played in shaping our nation and our lives provides a valuable lesson in the transcendent power of the classics.

With the help of a DNA test, Harper Taylor has finally located the family she’s always longed for—but has it also put her in the crosshairs of a killer? Suspense, romance, and secrets meld in this engrossing novel from USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble. Harper Taylor is used to being alone—after all, she grew up in one foster home after another. Oliver Jackson finally took her under his wing when she was a runaway teenager, and now Harper pours her marine biology knowledge into Oliver’s research as his business partner. But she’s never stopped wishing for a family of her own. When a DNA test reveals a half sister living just two hours away, Harper is shocked. She meets with Annabelle, whose story is strikingly similar to her own. Is it just a coincidence that both of their mothers died tragically, without revealing their father’s name? When Harper’s business partner is attacked, his son Ridge steps in to help. Ridge still sees Harper as a troubled teen even all these years later, but he soon finds himself working with her to uncover dangerous secrets that threaten to destroy them all. Ridge and Harper must unravel her past before they can have any hope for the future. Harper’s childhood is resurfacing—but will the truth save her or pull her under? Did Troy and Sally leave Riverdale in good hands? Is Andy up to the task of solving both multiple murders and an arson that killed an additional twenty people? Investigative reporter Joel Hickman thinks not, and Hickman pressures the mayor and Chief of Police Roger Elway to fire Andy Sinnott. When evidence points to Harvey Fredriks, Rat’s friend “George” from the novel Pickaxe, being the Icepick Killer, Rat teams up with Andy, Linda, and Pathologist Earl Stowe to prove Harvey’s innocence and track down the real killer. But even the best laid plans of Rat and men often go awry, and the killer targets Stowe, Linda, Lorraine Evangelista, Andy, and Rat as his next victims. Book Description
Stockholm is a novel about a Los Angeles newspaper reporter who is given an unwanted and unusual assigment to convince a niece of the publisher to leave a religious cult that has been formed in a remote area of vast central California. The reporter, Don Haskins, reluctantly goes. But instead of accomplishing his mission he finds himself intrigued by a beautiful young girl at the cult, one who appears to have a mysterious background. An integrated subplot concerns the trial of two girls for the murder of a Beverly Hills society couple. Haskins covers the murder and trial and finds himself in sympathy with the girls and their lifestyle, just as he has been drawn into the world of the cult. The novel is set in the mid-seventies, a period of irrational fear that gripped cities following the murders by the Charles Manson girls. The title is taken from the Stockholm Syndrome, an unexpected emotional attachment that develops between a hostage and a captor.
