Saturday's Silence
Author: Richard McLauchlan
Publisher: University of Wales Press
ISBN: 1783169222
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
R. S. Thomas is recognised globally as one of the major poets of the twentieth century. Such detailed attention as has been paid to the religious dimensions of his work has, however, largely limited itself to such matters as his obsession with the ‘absent God’, his appalled fascination with the mixed cruelty and wonder of a divinely created world, his interest in the world-view of the ‘new physics’, and his increasingly heterodox stance on spiritual matters. What has been largely neglected is his central indebtedness to key features of the ‘classic’ Christian tradition. This book concentrates on one powerful and compelling example of this, reading Thomas’s great body of religious work in the light of the three days that form the centre of the Gospel narrative; the days which tell of the death, entombment and resurrection of Christ.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Saturday Reader, Vol. 1: September, 1865, to March, 1866 The Arnold Prize Essay for 1865 you will find much more interesting than usual. Even the late J. B. Macaulay I am sure would vote against tearing it up into spills wherewith to light candles made out of prize sheep. The Es say is a rapid review of the historyof varionsse cret societies the Rosicrucians, the Gnostics, the Imailites, the Freemasons, the Vehmgerichte, and others. In many French and German novels the agents of the behmgcrichte play prominent parts, which unlearnod readers are apt to nitri bute to the imagination of the author. This is not altogether the case. The Vehmgerichte was at one time n.greet power in the Father land. In days when robber nobles, strong in their feu dal castles, wrought their licentious will u on all around and weaker than themselves, when ey set the law and the monarch alike at defiance plundered, ravished and burned at their good pleasure, the Vehmgerichtc did not a little good service in visiting than with chastisemcnt. Nam bering in its ranks man y thousands or more bound together by oaths of mickle might, it worked in secret. Its courts were held in the dark recesses of the forest; to disobey its summons was cer tain death, while condemnation byit was follow ed by immediate execution on the nearest tree. Once that the word had gone forth its agents fol lowed the appointed victim wheresoever he might roam. Sooner or later, unless prematurely cut oil, he was sure to be found, perhaps in his tent or his bed, or his garden, stabbed to the heart with the mark of the Vehmgerichte, u gushed cross, deeply cut in his heart. Fearful must have been the days When such means were necessary to punish the wicked, but German writers claim that the society did much to hold evil doers in check, and tonmeliorate the evils of the day. Revelation: a Reader's Companion

Book Description
Revelation: A Reader’s Companion – Preserving Perspective. – This book is the sixth in a series of scriptural novels. It concludes with the aged apostle John helping churches preserve the perspective that Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords to the glory of God the Father. Scriptural novels present a problem when weaving fact with fiction, leaving readers wondering exactly what is true, which betrays my purpose: to grasp the truths of eternal life. Yet I hope a living encounter with the historical setting, such as I offer, will provide a framework for grappling with the meaning of Scripture in personal terms.
