Book Description
This is volume one of the six-volume Shankara Source Book, which contains writings by Shri Shankara, arranged systematically by subject.Shri Shankara was a great philosopher-sage who expressed the non-dual teachings in such a complete and satisfactory way that his formulation has been followed by authentic teachers of the non-dual tradition ever since. Most of his writings are in the form of commentaries on revealed texts such as the principle Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras, so what he said was placed around those texts, which are far from systematic. His aim was to demonstrate that underlying the apparent contradictions and differences on the surface, all the great revealed scriptures in fact point ultimately to one Supreme Truth. He wished to do this in order to overcome the confusion that was causing hardship to the people at large, and creating difficulties for dedicated seekers. Shankara probably lived in the 8th century, and died in his early 30s.Shankara considered other views in great detail, sometimes provisionally accepting elements of their arguments, and then pointing out where those views lead to difficulties. One of the great qualities of the non-dual teachings as formulated by Shankara is that they are able to recognise and incorporate what is valid and useful in other views. All this can make it difficult to find what Shankara said on particular subjects. To meet this difficulty, in the Source Book, the writings have been freshly translated, and brought together under subject headings. These in turn have been arranged in six volumes each covering one broad topic. These are: Volume 1 Shankara on the AbsoluteVolume 2 Shankara on the CreationVolume 3 Shankara on the SoulVolume 4 Shankara on Rival ViewsVolume 5 Shankara on DiscipleshipVolume 6 Shankara on Enlightenment

Book Description
Here presented is the Vedanta of Sankara, also called Advaita Vedanta, in its sources. Its sources are: firstly, Sankara's commentary on the Brahma-sutras; secondly, Sankara's commentary on the Bhagavad-gita; and thirdly, Sankara's commentaries on the principal Upanisads. Ganganatha Jhais acknowledged as the foremost translator of Indian philosophical, or darsana, texts. He earned this distinction through his translations of primary texts of the Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya, Yoga, and Purva Mimamsasystems. Here, at the close of his life, he presented lectures on the sixth and last darsana, the Vedanta system. This book thus provides unique insights into Vedanta.

Book Description
This latest addition to Sankara literature is totally different in concept. It`s based solidly in tradition, and it is at the same time just the kind of presentation that makes the postmodern reader sit up and take notice. It is philosophical, yet never forbiddingly so. It reads more like a story. The prose is simple, smooth, and meditative. Padmapada, Sankara`s senior disciple, narrates the story in very human terms. His intent is not to glorify his master`s life and work--for that is hardly necessary--but to present him as a friend of humankind, someone who is needed generation after generation, millennium after millennium. Humans have not changed in terms of their strengths or their weaknesses since the race first evolved on the planet, nor are they likely to morph into saints any time soon. The prophets help us cope with the trials and tribulations of our daily lives and remind us of our divine roots if we care to listen. This book answers some of your serious questions about life if you have them read. If you don`t, it will help you formulate them. Coming up with the right questions, after all, is the first step toward finding the right solutions.INDUSEKHARA SASTRI MADUGULA taught English Language and Literature at Andhra University, Waltair, Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad, India, and California State University, Bakersfield, California. He is currently head of the Reference Department in Palm Springs Public Library, Palm Springs, California.
