Book Description
A very handy practical book written by French doctors specialised in disaster medicine, this guide offers their core experience condensed in 50 small, easily digestible chapters. Each chapter is designed to enable the reader to “know”, “understand”, and learn what to “do” in the concerned situation, ensuring the crucial information is easily on hand and available. Facing disasters, whether natural or man-made, technological or social, what are the risks and the consequences of such hazards on victims? What kind of care to provide? How to get organised, to have the appropriate resources, and to protect oneself as a responder? The French emergency and healthcare preparedness has followed a unique path. The responding medical doctors have followed in the footsteps of Dominique Larrey, a military surgeon and the father of emergency medicine. For him, the on-scene presence of doctors is paramount to organise the entire healthcare and emergency response, an innovative method that has proven its efficacy. This book is intended for all healthcare and emergency staff, doctors, paramedics or first aiders in ambulances or in emergency services who might come to deal with a massive influx of injured, poisoned, or traumatised victims. The management of multiple concomitant emergencies requires specific know-how and skills. May this guide contribute to the dissemination of a validated French know-how and thus to save lives and alleviate suffering.

Book Description
This book provides glimpses into contemporary research in information systems & technology, learning, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and security and how it applies to the real world, but the ideas presented also span the domains of telehealth, computer vision, the role and use of mobile devices, brain–computer interfaces, virtual reality, language and image processing and big data analytics and applications. Great research arises from asking pertinent research questions. This book reveals some of the authors’ “beautiful questions” and how they develop the subsequent “what if” and “how” questions, offering readers food for thought and whetting their appetite for further research by the same authors.

Book Description
In the USA, the COVID-19 crisis came as an unpleasant surprise and a shock to many healthcare systems and hospitals, especially in the crisis epicenter, New York City. The Bronx was one of the hardest hit boroughs of New York City, with significant negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its indigent population. SBH Health System (formerly known as St. Barnabas Hospital) is an integrated system of an acute care hospital, ambulatory care center, trauma center, dialysis center, stroke center and other services and facilities, serving the community of the Bronx. The story of SBH in preparing for and managing the rapidly escalating surge of severely ill patients is a treasure of lessons in health crisis preparedness and management at all levels: clinical, administrative, financial, etc. These lessons can be used for other acute care hospital settings and other potential health crises that may arise in the future. Within a short 3 weeks, SBH increased its in-patient capacity by 50%. However, during the same short time, it increased its critical care capacity by over 500%, providing critical care to severely ill patients on ventilators. This book chronicles the situation step by step and describes how this accomplishment was done. Accounts from the frontline health workers and from the clinical and administrative leaders describe important aspects of crisis management, such as team building, multi-departmental coordination, effective communications, dynamic decision-making in response to rapidly changing situations, keeping up the morale and caring for the healthcare workers and managing the supply chain. The uniqueness of the experience of SBH is enhanced by the fact that SBH is a low budget “safety net” hospital serving the poorest population in New York City. The worldwide trend is toward tighter healthcare budgets with demands for higher efficiency and productivity. There is a lot to be learned from the SBH health crisis management, including how efficient management, team building, management of limited resources and collaborative workplace culture make the foundation of success in the face of the crisis of the century. This unique text serves as a “how to” guide for implementing skills necessary for crisis management. Lessons from the success of SBH in tackling the dramatically fast unfolding crisis are utilized in a clear and concise manner. Such lessons may benefit other health systems and hospitals in planning and preparing for similar crises.

Book Description
This volume is published with a triple aim: to take a look back over the advances during the ten years of the Mediterranean Burns Club and mark its anniversary; to follow up and strengthen the successful twin ning of burns as a clinical, individual illness problem and fires as a societal, disaster management problem; and to look ahead at the per spectives of burn care and fire prevention in the fast-approaching new century. The occasion also marks the tenth annual presentation of the prestigious G. Whitaker International Burns Prize, to which the Mediterranean Burns Club acts as the scientific fulcrum. The award is now established as the most distinguished recognition in burns science worldwide, and it is gratifying that the contributions of many of the renowned recipients will be found in this book. This is a sequel to The Management of Mass Burn Casualties and Fire Disasters, which contained the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Burns and Fire Disasters. The book and the conference have fully justified the authors' initial concept that burn specialists, con stantly combatting burn disease and promoting rehabilitation of the victims, especially in mass casualty situations, had for too long remained separate from that other essential sector, the fire-fighting authorities and fire prevention systems, whose aim is also the protection of the individual and the promotion of safety. This long overdue synergism has now become reality, and the present volume strengthens this desirable trend.
