Book Description
In the Name of Friendship: Deguy, Derrida and "Salut" centres on the relationship between poet Michel Deguy and philosopher Jacques Derrida. Translations of two essays, "Of Contemporaneity" by Deguy and "How to Name" by Derrida, allow Christopher Elson and Garry Sherbert to develop the implications of this singular intellectual friendship. In these thinkers’ efforts to reinvent secular forms of the sacred, such as the singularity of the name, and especially poetic naming, Deguy, by adopting a Derridean programme of the impossible, and Derrida, by developing Deguy's ethics of naming through the word "salut," situate themselves at the forefront of contemporary debates over politics and religion alongside figures like Alain Badiou and Jean-Luc Marion, John Caputo and Martin Hagglund.

Formes Du Salut
Author: Emmanuelle Mercier
Publisher: Presses universitaires de Louvain
ISBN: 287558958X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
Formes du salut invites you to privately discover seven sculptures and a painted panel from the Val Duchesse Abbey. These works are part of abbot Mignot's collection, they were bequeathed to the Royal Trust and were deposited at the Musée L. Via this book, the Museum wishes to highlight the conservation-restoration work carried out at the Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (IRPA), thanks to the Baillet Latour Fund: apart from its practical use, which guarantees the preservation, durability and transmission of this heritage for future generations, this intervention has made it possible to document the uses and history of the sculptures, often reworked according to the circumstances of their exhibition. Therefore, the share of these works in religious life and, more precisely, their role in the search for salvation by Christians, lies also at the heart of this book. Emmanuelle Mercier (IRPA), Erika Rabelo (IRPA) and Matthieu Somon (UCLouvain) have created a kind of religious art pragmatics and they reconstruct the inscription of the works in the religious life of the medieval period: the interactions were much livelier than their current presentation might lead one to believe!

Music, Musicians, and the Saint-Simonians
Author: Ralph P. Locke
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226489025
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 440
Book Description
The Saint-Simonians, whose movement flourished in France between 1825 and 1835, are widely recognized for their contributions to history and social thought. Until now, however, no full account has been made of the central role of the arts in their program. In this skillful interdisciplinary study, Ralph P. Locke describes and documents the Saint-Simonians' view of music as an ideological tool and the influence of this view on musical figures of the day. The disciples of Claude Henri de Rouvroy, comte de Saint-Simon, believed that increased industrial production would play a crucial role in improving the condition of the working masses and in shifting power from the aristocratic "drones" to the enterprising men of talent then rising in the French middle class. As a powerful means of winning support for their views, music became an integral part of the Saint-Simonians' writings and ceremonial activities. Among the musicians Locke discusses are Berlioz, Liszt, and Mendelssohn, whose tangential association with the Saint-Simonians reveals new aspects of their social and aesthetic views. Other musicians became the Saint-Simonians' faithful followers, among them Jules Vinçard, Dominique Tajan-Rogé, and particularly Félicien David, the movement's principal composer. Many of these composers' works, reconstructed by Locke from authentic sources, are printed here, including the "Premier Chant des industriels," written at Saint-Simon's request by Rouget de Lisle, composer of the "Marseillaise."
