Book Description
RVING SLAB CITY, CALIFORNIA, is a complete guide to RVing to what is often referred to as the 'Last Free Place." In the United States we have freedom to roam in Recreational Vehicles, which are commonly referred to as RVs, like nowhere else in the world. Though rarely marked on maps, there is a place in California known as Slab City or The Slabs that takes this RVing freedom to the extreme. It is not only free of boondocking (also known as "dry" camping or staying in an RV without hookups) fees, it is also largely free of rules and regulations. Before I had actually been there and boondocked there and experienced it for myself, I could not believe that such a place could exist. Now that I have been there, its existence still seems problematical to me. One of the reasons I keep returning is, I think, to see if it is still there as I remember it to have been. The talk of "developing" it was around long before I first went there, and it continues. It is known as "the last free place," but I have no idea how much longer this will continue. Development will surely mean fees and restrictions, so if you want to experience the off-the-grid free and unrestricted boondocking in your RV, you had better do it now. This book is all about what led me to Slab City, why I keep returning, and what I do while I am there. And more importantly it is about how you can experience Slab City for yourself. This book is intended as a complete guide for RVing Slab City, with history and how Slab City came to be thrown in for good measure. It's also about boondocking in RVs in general and in Slab City in particular. Slab City is off the grid. There are no hookups. If you want to spend time in your RV at Slab City, you boondock. There is no other choice. This book shows how.

Book Description
Turning the attention to the temporal as well as the more familiar spatial dimensions of mobility, this volume focuses on the momentum for and temporal composition of mobility, the rate at which people enact or deploy their movements as well as the conditions under which these moves are being marshalled, represented and contested. This is an anthropological exploration of temporality as a form of action, a process of actively modulating or responding to how people are moving rather than the more usual focus in mobility studies on where they are heading.

Book Description
Discover the diverse range of housing options available to the elderly population with this excellent new book. This timely volume addresses the public policy and design and development issues that must necessarily face those concerned with housing our steadily growing elderly population. The chapters cover a broad spectrum of populations including elderly people in “aging ghettoes” in suburbia, continuing care retirement community residents, full-time recreational vehicle travelers, and the homeless elderly. The authoritative contributors go beyond descriptions of wide-ranging elderly housing options and delve into the central themes that influence them all. Optimizing Housing for the Elderly explores some common considerations such as personal security, food and medical services, independence, and social interaction, that are important determining factors when selecting a style of housing, and addresses economic questions including advice on reducing costs in popular continuing care retirement communities, currently inaccessible to lower-income elderly people. Professionals involved in any aspect of housing for the elderly will benefit from the information in this insightful book.

Book Description
Academic Writing is a unique introduction to the subject. As the author puts it in her preface, “this book develops from a strong claim: namely, that style is meaningful.” In developing that theme, the author draws meaningfully on theory, especially genre theory, while remaining grounded in the particular. Giltrow presents and discusses examples of actual academic writing of the sort that students must learn to deal with daily, and to write themselves. As newcomers to the scholarly community, students can find that community’s ways of reading and writing mysterious, unpredictable and intimidating. Academic Writing demystifies the scholarly genres, shedding light on their discursive conventions and on academic readers’ expectations and values. Throughout, Academic Writing respects the student writer; it engages the reader’s interest without ever condescending, and it avoids the arbitrary and the dogmatic. The book also offers abundant exercises to help the student develop techniques for working productively at each stage of the scholarly writing process; mastering and summarizing difficult scholarly sources; planning; and revising to create good working conditions for the reader. The third edition of Giltrow’s extremely successful book incorporates extensive revisions that integrate the theoretical perspectives of genre theory into the whole of the book in a more organic fashion; the changes are designed to make the book both more attuned to scholarly practice and more accessible to the undergraduate student. Giltrow’s Academic Reading is designed as an accompanying reader for Academic Writing.
