Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Alumni Association of Rutgers College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, at Its 104th Anniversary, June 16th, 1874 Dear Sir: - Great regret has been expressed since the adjournment of the Alumni Association, of Rutgers College, that instead of the formal request for a copy of your very able and valuable address for preservation in the archives, appropriate measures were not taken to secure its publication, with your permission, in pamphlet form. Prominent members, among whom I take the liberty of mentioning the names of Maurice E. Viele, Esq., and Rev. Joachim Elmendorf, D. D., have suggested that, as President of the Association, I should, on its behalf, solicit a copy for the press. Cordially approving the suggestion, I do now prefer this request, and assure you, my dear sir, that in granting it you will yield to the wishes of every one who listened to your oration, and who believes that the sound principles therein set forth and defended, ought to have a wider circulation, and a more permanent influence. Dear Sir: - Yours of the 10th inst. was duly received. Allow me to thank you for your kind expression of interest in reference to my address before our Alumni. "Over the past fifteen years, journalism has experienced a rapid proliferation of data about online reader behavior in the form of web metrics. These newsroom metrics influence which stories are written, how news is promoted, and which journalists get hired and fired. Some argue that metrics help journalists better serve their audiences. Others worry that metrics are the contemporary equivalent of a stopwatch-wielding factory manager. In Desperate Measures, Caitlin Petre offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how metrics are reshaping the work of journalism. Over a period of four years, Petre conducted a mix of in-depth interviews and ethnographic observation at three sites. The book first shows how metrics tools are designed and marketed, via Petre's research at the prominent news analytics company Chartbeat. Petre then follows Chartbeat's tool into the newsrooms of two of the company's highest-profile clients: Gawker Media and The New York Times. She finds that newsroom metrics are a powerful form of managerial surveillance and discipline. However, unlike the manager's stopwatch that preceded them, digital metrics are designed to gain the trust of wary journalists by providing a habit-forming user experience that mimics key features of addictive games. Recently, childfree people have been foregrounded in mainstream media. More than seven percent of Western women choose to remain childfree and this figure is increasing. Being childfree challenges the ‘procreation imperative’ residing at the center of our hetero-normative understandings, occupying an uneasy position in relation to—simultaneously—traditional academic ideologies and prevalent social norms. After all, as Adi Avivi recognizes, "if a woman is not a mother, the patriarchal social order is in danger."
