Book Description
Propp's essay in Russian Folk Lyrics extends beyond the formalistic analysis of folklore outlined in his classic The Morphology of the Folktale. In this study, newly translated by Roberta Reeder, Propp considers the Russian folk lyric in the social and historical context in which it was produced. Reeder supplements Propp's theoretical presentation with a comprehensive anthology of examples. Some songs were imitated by or appear in the works of Russia's major writers, such as Pushkin and Nekrasov. Here we find the customs of Russian peasant life expressed through the ritual of song. Whether the songs are about love, labor, or children's games; whether they are sad, humorous, or satiric in tone, Russian folk lyrics are rich in metaphor and symbolic meaning. In addition to the editor's notes to the text and songs, Reeder supplies a bibliography of Propp's sources as well as an extensive selected bibliography.

Book Description
Excerpt from Russian Lyrics: With Notes and Vocabulary There are two short Appendices. The first deals with the Aspects of the verb. If Accent is the first lion in the path, Aspect is the second; yet to read Russian and to ignore Aspects, is to study Hamlet with the part of Hamlet left out. Hence the Notes are full of the words perfective and 'imperfective (for which, but for tradition, I should like to substitute 'aorist' and But this seemed insufficient; and therefore, in this Appendix, perfective verb, of the simplest kind, is compared in detail with its imperfective. A student who has mastered this will still have much to learn about Aspects, but I hope that he will have nothing to unlearn. For refreshment, he can turn to the second Appendix, which contains two translations by the Hon. Maurice Baring; I am grateful to him and his publishers for permission to reprint here these excellent renderings.
