Book Description
I can't go through with this! Lux Copper couldn’t go through with it: marrying Mario Blevins and becoming a part of his snobbish family just weeks before Christmas. He was okay, but their families push them together for some kind of alignment of fortunes or whatever. As she walked up the aisle, her mind raced, searching for an escape route. Lux locked eyes with Hudson Falk at the back of the chapel, her best friend. In that instant, he extended his hand to her. Without a second thought, Lux turned and ran to him, amidst shocked gasps and her father's angry voice. Little did she know, taking Hudson's hand would lead to more than she could have ever anticipated, making for a Christmas people could only dream of. Hudson Falk had fallen for Lux Cooper, from the moment they met. Playing the role of her best friend had been a challenge, especially when her father announced her engagement. He didn't fit into their refined, wealthy social circles, they would be in awe of his secret – he was the son of a Norse winter god in a human world. Those secrets were never meant to be revealed, until now, and only to Lux. Taking her hand and fleeing from the chapel with her presented him with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Their impromptu escape led to unexpected turns: "Let's run away to Norway?" – "Yes." "Let's get drunk and get married?" – "Okay, neither of them had anticipated that." "I'm actually a Norse god, and I do mystical things." – Lux looked skeptical until he showed her his true life. Now that Hudson had Lux, he had no intention of letting her go. After all, he was a Viking, and love was their expertise. Beneath the enchanting Northern Lights for Christmas, in a glass igloo, nestled in the snow. Hudson would show Lux how his kisses could warm her and how his love held no expectations, except enduring beyond a lifetime, just for her.

Book Description
What kid hasn't wanted to make their parents feel sorry for treating him badly? And how better to accomplish this than to run away? Here's a guide showing how, from what to pack (gum--then you won't have to brush your teeth) to how to survive (don't think about your cozy bed). Ultimately, though, readers will see that there really is no place like home. Like Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, here's a spot-on portrait of a kid who's had it. And like Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, it's also a journey inside a creative kid's imagination: that special place where parents aren't allowed without permission.

Book Description
Changed Forever is the first study to gather a range of texts produced by Native Americans who, voluntarily or through compulsion, attended government-run boarding schools in the last decades of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth centuries. Arnold Krupat examines Hopi, Navajo, and Apache boarding-school narratives that detail these students' experiences. The book's analyses are attentive to the topics (topoi) and places (loci) of the boarding schools. Some of these topics are: (re-)Naming students, imposing on them the regimentation of Clock Time, compulsory religious instruction and practice, and corporal punishment, among others. These topics occur in a variety of places, like the Dormitory, the Dining Room, the Chapel, and the Classroom. Krupat's close readings of these narratives provide cultural and historical context as well as critical commentary. In her study of the Chilocco Indian School, K. Tsianina Lomawaima asked poignantly, "What has become of the thousands of Indian voices who spoke the breath of boarding-school life?" Changed Forever lets us hear some of them.

A teenage girl treks across a dangerous, frozen nation to reunite with her family in this Philip K. Dick Award–winning apocalyptic thriller. Wylodine comes from a world of paranoia and poverty. Her family grows marijuana illegally in order to survive. But now she’s been left behind in Ohio to tend the crop alone. Then spring doesn’t return for the second year in a row, bringing unprecedented, extreme winter. With grow lights stashed in her truck and a pouch of precious seeds, Wil begins a journey to join her family in California. But the icy roads and strangers hidden in the hills are treacherous. Gathering a small group of exiles on her way, she becomes the target of a volatime cult leader. Because she has the most valuable skill in the climate chaos: she can make things grow. Road Out of Winter offers a glimpse into an all-too-possible near future, with a chosen family forged in the face of dystopian collapse. Book Description
The epic story of war and medicine from the award-winning author of North Woods and The Piano Tuner is "a dream of a novel...part mystery, part war story, part romance" (Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See). Vienna, 1914. Lucius is a twenty-two-year-old medical student when World War I explodes across Europe. Enraptured by romantic tales of battlefield surgery, he enlists, expecting a position at a well-organized field hospital. But when he arrives, at a commandeered church tucked away high in a remote valley of the Carpathian Mountains, he finds a freezing outpost ravaged by typhus. The other doctors have fled, and only a single, mysterious nurse named Sister Margarete remains. But Lucius has never lifted a surgeon's scalpel. And as the war rages across the winter landscape, he finds himself falling in love with the woman from whom he must learn a brutal, makeshift medicine. Then one day, an unconscious soldier is brought in from the snow, his uniform stuffed with strange drawings. He seems beyond rescue, until Lucius makes a fateful decision that will change the lives of doctor, patient, and nurse forever. From the gilded ballrooms of Imperial Vienna to the frozen forests of the Eastern Front; from hardscrabble operating rooms to battlefields thundering with Cossack cavalry, The Winter Soldier is the story of war and medicine, of family, of finding love in the sweeping tides of history, and finally, of the mistakes we make, and the precious opportunities to atone. "The Winter Soldier brims with improbable narrative pleasures...These pages crackle with excitement... A spectacular success." —Anthony Marra, New York Times Book Review
