Book Description
Trinidad, formerly part of the British Empire, 1970s . . It appears that the Inspector had an outside child and that you are his outside grandchild. It's like in that Harry Belafonte calypso: 'Your daddy ain't your daddy, but your daddy don't know.' 'That calypso?' Rufus repeated, again in disbelief. 'Don't you know that is Lord Melody's calypso? Don't you know what happened with Rum and Coca-Cola and many other calypsos?' 'I don't care whose calypso it is, Rufus. The point is that you are apparently part of a little shame and scandal in the family.' Rufus's life has much to offer. In spite of his haphazard family background (aunties who act as mothers, fathers who don't seem too interested) Rufus has done well at school. The chance of a foreign university, and a way out of his narrow universe, are his for the taking. First, though, he has to get a passport. But, passport offices have this quaint habit of wanting to know who your parents were. Rufus would like to know, too. In fact, his passionate desire to know which of his many uncles and aunties, which of the many family friends, are his real biological parents, comes to dominate his daily life. But some secrets don't want to be uncovered .

Rethinking Rufus
Author: Thomas A. Foster
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 0820355224
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
Rethinking Rufus is the first book-length study of sexual violence against enslaved men. Scholars have extensively documented the widespread sexual exploitation and abuse suffered by enslaved women, with comparatively little attention paid to the stories of men. However, a careful reading of extant sources reveals that sexual assault of enslaved men also occurred systematically and in a wide variety of forms, including physical assault, sexual coercion, and other intimate violations. To tell the story of men such as Rufus-who was coerced into a sexual union with an enslaved woman, Rose, whose resistance of this union is widely celebrated-historian Thomas A. Foster interrogates a range of sources on slavery: early American newspapers, court records, enslavers' journals, abolitionist literature, the testimony of formerly enslaved people collected in autobiographies and in interviews, and various forms of artistic representation. Foster's sustained examination of how black men were sexually violated by both white men and white women makes an important contribution to our understanding of masculinity, sexuality, the lived experience of enslaved men, and the general power dynamics fostered by the institution of slavery. Rethinking Rufus illuminates how the conditions of slavery gave rise to a variety of forms of sexual assault and exploitation that affected all members of the community.

Curtius Rufus, Histories of Alexander the Great, Book 10
Author:
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 019156785X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
This book presents a translation, with commentary, of a major Roman source on the end of the reign of Alexander the Great. Book 10 of Curtius' Histories covers the reign of terror and mutiny that followed upon Alexander's return from India; and offers the fullest account of the power struggle that began in Babylon immediately after his death. The Introduction establishes a profile of Curtius Rufus (quite probably a Roman Senator of the first century AD), and his agenda as a historian. John Yardley's translation and the commentary are designed for the reader without Latin. The Commentary provides detailed analysis of the historical events of the crucial period 325-3 BC covered by Curtius, and also tries to get behind the surface level of meaning to show how Curtius intended his history to be a text for his time. Curtius' text is also examined as a literary achievement in its own right.

Gian Vittorio Rossi's Eudemiae libri decem
Author: Jennifer K. Nelson
Publisher: Narr Francke Attempto Verlag
ISBN: 3823302647
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 911
Book Description
Gian Vittorio Rossi (1577–1647) was an active participant in the intellectual and artistic community in Rome orbiting around Pope Urban VIII and the powerful Barberini family. His prolific literary output encompassed letters, dialogues, orations, biographies, poetry, and fiction. A superlative Latinist, Rossi unleashed his biting wit and deep knowledge of Classical literature against perceived societal wrongs. Set on the fictional island of Eudemia in the first century CE, Eudemiae libri decem is a satirical novel that criticizes Rossi's own society for its system of patronage and favors that he saw as rewarding wealth and opulence over skill and hard work. An understudied figure, Rossi's involvement with one of Rome's premier literary academies and his relationships with intellectuals in Italy and throughout Europe provide a unique insider view of seventeenth-century Rome.
