Book Description
The book is a selected portion of my Ph.D. dissertation entitled ‘A Critical Study of Abhilasitarthacintamani (otherwise known as Manasollasa) by Somesvara submitted for Ph.D. degree in Sanskrit in the University of Calcutta in the year 2000. The encyclopaedic Sanskrit text Manasollasa authored by South Indian Karnataka king Bhulokamalladeva Somesvara of 12 th century CE., contains 100 chapters on different topics. Among them 50-60 chapters enumerate different types of social festivals and rituals, foods, poetics, different types of sports and games, animal sports, gemology hunting sex-sport etal of a king. Manasollasa or Abhilasitarthacintamani of King Somesvara III displays a unique structural composition of five units each again being a composite of the numeral twenty (vimsati). Each of the five sections (prakaranas) are again classified in twenty chapters (adhyayas). Among those five prakaranas or sections the third vimsati or Upabhogavimsati of Manasollasa describes twenty types of enjoyments or upabhogas to fulfill the king’s desire. The last two vimsatis are Vinoda vimsati and Krida vimsati. In these two vimsatis different types of amusements, sports and games are narrated. Vinoda vimsati deals with different movements and sports of elephants and horses which are named as gajavahyalivinoda and vajivahyalivinoda respectively. Other vinodas enumerate amusements, the sports of cocks, quail, ram, buffalos, pigeons, dogs, falcons and fishes. The fifteenth chapter of Vinodavimsati is Mrigayavinoda, which deals with king’s sport of hunting. And this special type of sport is of various kinds.

Chicago by Day and Night
Author: Paul Durica
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 0810129094
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
Showcasing the first Ferris wheel, dazzling and unprecedented electrification, and exhibits from around the world, the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was Chicago’s chance to demonstrate that it had risen from the ashes of the Great Fire and was about to take its place as one of the world’s great cities. Millions would flock to the fair, and many of them were looking for a good time before and after their visits to the Midway and the White City. But what was the bedazzled visitor to do in Chicago? Chicago by Day and Night: The Pleasure Seeker’s Guide to the Paris of America, a very unofficial guide to the world beyond the fair, slaked the thirst of such curious folk. The pleasures it details range from the respectable (theater, architecture, parks, churches and synagogues) to the illicit—drink, gambling, and sex. With a wink and a nod, the book decries vice while offering precise directions for the indulgence of any desire. In this newly annotated edition, Chicagoans Paul Durica and Bill Savage—who, if born earlier, might have written chapters in the original—provide colorful context and an informative introduction to a wildly entertaining journey through the Chicago of 120 years ago.

Sport, Fun and Enjoyment
Author: Ian Wellard
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136178783
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
Sport, Fun and Enjoyment explores the pleasurable aspects of sport within the context of everyday recreational and competitive physical activities. While much recent work has focused on the relationships between physical activity, health and wellbeing, much less attention has been paid to pleasure and fun, key aspects of our engagement with sport but not so easy to measure in terms of specific outcomes. By offering a critical exploration of what can be constituted as ‘fun’ in a sporting context, this book reveals the complex ways in which individuals approach sport and engage with it throughout the life course. The book considers the importance of pleasure and fun as a factor in our initial, formative experiences of sport activity, and as a factor in participation and continued participation. It explores the nature of fun as an embodied experience which incorporates a multitude of social, psychological and physiological components, and as a subjective experience which cannot be fully explained through simplistic binary formulations of pleasure and pain. Drawing on a wide research literature and original empirical research with children and adults, the book outlines a new theoretical framework for thinking about pleasure and fun in sport, highlighting the contrasting ways in which sport and physical activity is experienced and the interplay between individual and social contexts. Sport, Fun and Enjoyment is important reading for anybody with an interest in physical education, youth sport, the sociology of sport, physical activity and health, sport development or sport policy.
