Book Description
This report presents statistical information relating to the number of gas turbine engine rotor failures which occurred during 1976 in commercial aviation service use. The predominant failure involved blade fragments, 88 percent of which were contained. Although fewer rotor rim, disk, and seal failures occurred, all were uncontained. Sixty-seven percent of the 186 rotor failures occurred during the takeoff and climb stages of flight. (Author).

Book Description
The program objective is to develop guidelines for the design of optimum weight containment rings for turbine engine rotor fragments. Rotor/disk and blade containment experiments were conducted using strain gage instrumented containment rings. The tests were conducted to study, by means of high-speed photography and strain measurements, the interaction that takes place between the rotor fragments and containment ring during the containment process. The recorded information was supplied for use in the TEJ-2 or CIVM JET-4B computer programs which are being developed for use in the optimum design of containment/deflection devices. The characterization of blade and rotor fragment behavior and containment ring response was made possible by photographing blades and rotors intentionally modified to fail at their design operating speed.

Book Description
Presented are the results of a program of rotor burst containment experimentation that provides guidelines for the design of optimum weight turbine rotor disk fragment containment rings. These guidelines were derived by establishing the relationships between a measure of the ring's capability to contain fragment energy with respect to it's weight (the specific contained fragment energy - SCFE - derived by dividing the rotor burst energy by the weight of ring required to contain this energy) and other significant ring and rotor variables such as the: rotor tip diameter; number of rotor fragments; and ring radial thickness and axial length. The experiments consisted mainly of bursting 14 and 31 inch diameter turbine rotors into encircling containment rings made from centrifugally cast 4130 steel. Rules are given for achieving optimum weight ring designs. (Author).

Book Description
Statistics on gas turbine rotor failures that have occurred in U.S. commercial aviation during 1975 are presented. The compiled data were analyzed to establish: (1) The incidence of rotor failures and the number of contained and uncontained rotor bursts; (2) The distribution of rotor bursts with respect to engine rotor component; i.e., fan, compressor or turbine; (3) The type of rotor fragment (disk, rim or blade) typically generated at burst; (4) The cause of failure; (5) The type of engines involved; and (6) The flight condition at the time of failure. Book Description
Presented in this report are statistics on gas turbine rotor failures that have occurred in U.S. commercial aviation during 1974. These statistics are based on data compiled from the Flight Standards Service Difficulty Reports (SDR) that were published by the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The compiled data were analyzed to establish: (1) the incidence of rotor failures and the number of contained and uncontained rotor bursts; (2) the distribution of rotor bursts with respect to engine rotor component--i.e., fan, compressor or turbine; (3) the type of rotor fragment (disk, rim or blade) typically generated at burst; (4) the cause of failure; (5) the type of engines involved; and (6) the flight condition at the time of failure. It appears that causes beyond the control or scope of present technology, such as F.O.D., structural life and integrity prediction, and secondary effects, are still primarily responsible for most of the rotor failures that occur.

Book Description
Presented are the results of exploratory experimentation that was conducted in NAPTC Rotor Spin Facility to provide criteria for the design of turbomachine rotor burst fragment containment rings. High-speed photography was used to study containment processes involving freely supported rings of different materials and a variety of rotor and flat disk fragments.
