Some of the entries are short, such as Frank Murara who appears only on the 1890 Veterans Schedule as a Union veteran, possibly an itinerant railroad worker staying at a hotel in Comfort. Some entries are longer, such as Thomas Ingenhuett who served in both Confederate and Union units and whose pension application describes the 1864 Battle of Las Rucias and his subsequent escape through Mexico. Some entries contain unexpected information, such as J. W. Manning whose 1926 burial ceremony included a cross of red roses--a gift of the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1881, the Texas & Pacific Railroad described Abilene as the "Future Great City of the West." While the train line was laying rails west out of Fort Worth, a group of ranchers, wanting the new town to become a prominent cattle-shipping point, selected the name Abilene after Abilene, Kansas, which was a main cattle-shipping town in the 1870s. With the arrival of the railroad to Abilene, this part of Texas opened up for settlement. Chiefly a record of some of the descendants of James Sage. He was born ca. 1749 near London, England. He immigrated to America ca. 1773. He married Lovis (Lovice) Ott (Utt) 15 Dec 1780 in Montgomeroy County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Sylvester Ott. They were the parents of fourteen children. He died 17 Mar 1820. She died 28 Aug 1854. Descendants lived in Virginia, Missouri and elsewhere.
