Methods of Studying Root Systems
Author: W. Böhm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642672825
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Root research under natural field conditions is still a step-child of science. The reason for this is primarily methodological. The known methods are tedious, time consuming, and the accuracy of their results is often not very great. Many research workers have been discouraged by doing such root studies. The need for more information on the development and distribution of plant roots in different soils under various ecological conditions is, however, obvious in many ecological disciplines. Especially the applied botanical sciences such as agriculture, horticulture, and forestry are interested in obtaining more data on plant roots in the soil. This book will give a survey of existing methods in ecological root research. Primarily field methods are presented; techniques for pot experiments are described only so far as they are important for solving ecological problems. Laboratory methods for studying root physiology are not covered in this book. Scientific publications on roots are scattered in many different journals published all over the world. By working through the international root literature I found that about ten thousand papers on root ecology have been published at the present. This is not very much compared with the immense literature on the aboveground parts of the plants, but is, however, too much to cite in this book.

Numerical Methods for Roots of Polynomials - Part II
Author: J.M. McNamee
Publisher: Elsevier Inc. Chapters
ISBN: 0128076992
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
Whereas Newton’s method involves only the first derivative, methods discussed in this chapter involve the second or higher. The “classical” methods of this type (such as Halley’s, Euler’s, Hansen and Patrick’s, Ostrowski’s, Cauchy’s and Chebyshev’s) are all third order with three evaluations, so are slightly more efficient than Newton’s method. Convergence of some of these methods is discussed, as well as composite variations (some of which have fairly high efficiency). We describe special methods for multiple roots, simultaneous or interval methods, and acceleration techniques. We treat Laguerre’s method, which is known to be globally convergent for all-real-roots. The Cluster-Adapted Method is useful for multiple or near-multiple roots. Several composite methods are discussed, as well as methods using determinants or various types of interpolation, and Schroeder’s method.

Numerical Methods with C++ Programming
Author: NITA H. SHAH
Publisher: PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.
ISBN: 9788120335967
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
The rapid development of high speed digital computers and the increasing desire for numerical answers to applied problems have led to increased demands in the courses dealing with the methods and techniques of numerical analysis. Numerical methods have always been useful but their role in the present-day scientific research has become prominent. For example, they enable one to find the roots of transcendental equations and in solving nonlinear differential equations. Indeed, they give the solution when ordinary analytical methods fail. This well-organized and comprehensive text aims at enhancing and strengthening numerical methods concepts among students using C++ programming, a fast emerging preferred programming language among software developers. The book provides an synthesis of both theory and practice. It focuses on the core areas of numerical analysis including algebraic equations, interpolation, boundary value problem, and matrix eigenvalue problems. The mathematical concepts are supported by a number of solved examples. Extensive self-review exercises and answers are provided at the end of each chapter to help students review and reinforce the key concepts. KEY FEATURES : C++ programs are provided for all numerical methods discussed. More than 400 unsolved problems and 200 solved problems are included to help students test their grasp of the subject. The book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Mathematics, Engineering and Statistics. Besides, students pursuing BCA and MCA and having Numerical Methods with C++ Programming as a subject in their course will benefit from this book.

Author: James F. Epperson
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470049634
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 592
Book Description
Praise for the First Edition ". . . outstandingly appealing with regard to its style, contents, considerations of requirements of practice, choice of examples, and exercises." —Zentrablatt Math ". . . carefully structured with many detailed worked examples . . ." —The Mathematical Gazette ". . . an up-to-date and user-friendly account . . ." —Mathematika An Introduction to Numerical Methods and Analysis addresses the mathematics underlying approximation and scientific computing and successfully explains where approximation methods come from, why they sometimes work (or don't work), and when to use one of the many techniques that are available. Written in a style that emphasizes readability and usefulness for the numerical methods novice, the book begins with basic, elementary material and gradually builds up to more advanced topics. The text includes exercises that run the gamut from simple hand computations, to challenging derivations and minor proofs, to programming exercises. A greater emphasis on applied exercises as well as the cause and effect associated with numerical mathematics is featured throughout the book. An Introduction to Numerical Methods and Analysis is the ideal text for students in advanced undergraduate mathematics and engineering courses who are interested in gaining an understanding of numerical methods and numerical analysis.
