Book Description
"This remarkable book examines the impact of Rome on American artists and writers from the earliest days of the new republic to the present. In volume I: Classical Rome Vance shows, for example, how the Forum and the Colosseum inspired American thoughts of ideal republics and how the Pantheon presented a pagan challenge to American ideas of divinity, beauty, and sexuality. In volume II: Catholic and Contemporary Rome, Vance begins by examining the three foremost Roman Catholic symbols: the bambino, the madonna, and the pope. In the section on contemporary Rome, he addresses American attitudes toward Rome's earliest attempts at democratization, toward its aristocratic social structures, and toward the political changes that occurred after World War II"--Publisher's website, viewed August 23, 2018.

Book Description
Republics and empires provides transnational perspectives on the significance of Italy to American art and visual culture and the impact of the United States on Italian art and popular culture. Covering the period from the Risorgimento to the Cold War, it reveals the complexity of the visual discourses that bound two relatively new nations together. It also gives substantial attention to literary and critical texts that addressed the evolving cultural relationship between Italy and the United States. While American art history has tended to privilege French, British and German ties, these chapters highlight a rich body of contemporary research by Italian and American scholars that moves beyond a discussion of influence as a one-way directive towards a deeper understanding of cultural transactions that profoundly affected the artistic expression of both nations.

Book Description
Maud Howe Elliott (1854Ð1948), the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, was a Pulitzer PrizeÐwinning writer and a tireless supporter of the arts, particularly in her adopted city of Newport, Rhode Island. An art historian and the author of over twenty works of fiction and nonfiction, including countless articles and short stories, Elliott is perhaps best known for co-writing a biography of her motherÑa major figure in the political and cultural world of New England, a womanÕs suffrage leader, and a leading progressive political voice. Elliott sought to enhance community and regional life by founding the Art Association of Newport in 1912 (now the Newport Art Museum), which she saw as the culmination of her life's work.
