Book Description
This book brings together a range of scholars from 10 different countries to address the contemporary state of play in national standard language education – i.e. the L1 subjects. It seeks to understand the field from within a comparative-historical and transnational frame. Four thematic threads are woven through the volume: educationalisation; globalisation; pluriculturalism; and technologization. The chapters range over various aspects of L1 as a school subject: literature, language and literacy; reading and writing; media and digital technology; the dialogue between curriculum inquiry and Didaktik studies; the continuing relevance of Bildung; the significance of history and nation; and new challenges of culture and environment in the face of climate change. The book concludes with a reflection on the prospects for L1 education today and tomorrow, in a now thoroughly globalised context and, accordingly, deeply implicated in a necessary new project of nation re-building.

Book Description
Rapidly evolving digital technologies are reciprocally linked to the way people think, learn, generate knowledge, create, communicate, and collaborate in the digital age. These media-communicative and related sociocultural changes must be acknowledged in the educational context. The aim of the present study is, from a transnational perspective, to investigate experts’ anticipated L1 education futures in 2030 and teachers’ literacies deemed necessary in this context. The research aims are addressed through an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design reflected in the application of a three-round modified Delphi study. The panel is drawn from individuals who are considered experts at the intersection of (L1) education and digitalisation and are selected on their theoretical or applied expertise and their interest in the issue under investigation. It becomes clear that the experts emphasised the need for transformations regarding traditional structures, practices, and processes of teaching and learning by 2030, specifically given contemporary practices and forms of learning, thinking, and working in the digital age.

Book Description
This book offers a critical and reflective discussion of contemporary challenges for education relating to sustainability and post-factual truths in light of the concepts of knowledge and Bildung. The book uses the concepts of knowledge and Bildung as keys to grasp what education is, and how the different educational traditions can complement a better understanding of challenges to education. Knowledge is taken as the core of the Anglo-American and French educational traditions, and Bildung is key for German and Nordic Didaktik traditions. The book presents comparative analytical work from international scholars who discuss Bildung aims in the light of sustainability, and knowledge in light of the ‘post-factual’ era. Building on the 2021 book Didaktik and Curriculum in Ongoing Dialogue, the book will be highly relevant for researchers, scholars and postgraduate students in the fields of educational theory, pedagogy, curriculum studies and comparative education.

Book Description
This volume offers a critical overview of digital reading practices and scholarly efforts to analyze and understand reading in the mediatized landscape. Building on research about digital reading, born-digital literature, and digital audiobooks, The Digital Reading Condition explores reading as part of a broader cultural shift encompassing many forms of media and genres. Bringing together research from media and literary studies, digital humanities, scholarship on reading and learning, as well as sensory studies and research on multimodal and multisensory media reception, the authors address and challenge print-biased conceptions of reading that are still prevalent in research, whether the reading medium is print or digital. They argue that the act of reading itself is changing, and rather than rejecting digital media as unsuitable for sustained or focused reading practices, they argue that the complex media landscape challenges us to rethink how to define reading as a mediated practice. Presenting a truly interdisciplinary perspective on digital reading practices, this volume will appeal to scholars and graduate students in communication, media studies, new media and technology, literature, digital humanities, literacy studies, composition, and rhetoric.

Book Description
This book investigates the impact of education on the formation of character, moral education, and the communication of values in late modern pluralistic societies. Scholars from four continents and many different academic fields are involved. While the basic framework for the contributions is informed by Christian traditions, the disciplines cover a significant range, including theology, education, psychology, literature, anthropology, law, and business. This makes for a rich variety of thematic concentrations and perspectives. Readers will quickly sense that the educational foundations and trajectories of any given country are pervasive and have a significant reach into the fabric and shape of the society and its values, making education a barometer of the well-being of a people and their culture. The result is a volume that will inform, stimulate, and challenge our understanding of the role of education in contemporary societies.

Book Description
Centred around a contemporary conception of Bildung, this book effectively demonstrates how the aims of cross- and transcurricular teaching can be reconciled, resulting in a didactic framework for teaching and learning in secondary schools that can be applied internationally. Chapters present a nuanced and unified approach to fusing theory and practice by offering accounts of some of the most promising teaching methods from leading scholars in the field of curriculum research. These methods include dialogic teaching or movement integration, transversal competences like digital or entrepreneurial thinking, and topics that call for crosscurricular approaches, like sustainability or citizenship. Addressing diverse worries and criticisms of crosscurricular teaching, the book includes international viewpoints and trends such sustainability, citizenship, and student motivation to present a comprehensive and systematic scholarly treatment of crosscurricular didactics within the classroom. It further addresses important challenges that have been widely ignored, like how to evaluate crosscurricular work. Ultimately, this volume makes a highly novel contribution to the field of crosscurricular didactics, and will be of interest to researchers, scholars, academics in the fields of secondary education teaching and learning, educational science, and curriculum design. Those interested more broadly in the theory of education will also find the volume of use.

Book Description
This book contributes to the innovation of writing education and research globally by providing crucial insights into how the structures and aims of literacy curricula vary internationally. It examines how nine education systems across five continents represent ‘good writing’ in curricula that shape students’ experiences learning to write in school. The book presents curricular analyses aimed at providing insight into how writing development can be better supported through innovative policy and research. The findings regarding international variation are presented under three broad dimensions: social and contextual factors that shape writing curricula; the discourses of writing reflected in curricula and official documents; and hallmarks of classroom practice, including the relationship with official discourse. Case study chapters present integrated inductive and deductive document analyses, findings of which are compared in a concluding, cross-case analysis chapter. Offering a detailed comparative analysis of writing research, International Perspectives on Writing Curricula and Development will be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of education, literacy and curriculum studies. It will also be relevant reading for policymakers and curriculum designers. Chapters 1, 7, 9, 10, and 11 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Book Description
This book offers readers a diversity of perspectives, experiences and practical examples from various facets of Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) that can propel practice, further research and inform decision-making in the region, thus making for more cogent and effective ESE. The Caribbean region is comprised of what is said to be the largest number of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), together with the non-island nations of Belize, Guyana, and Suriname. Although diverse with respect to governance, size, topography, and income, the Caribbean region has a common set of geographic and socio-economic characteristics that make it vulnerable to environmental hazards, economic challenges and social instability. Further to these particular vulnerabilities are various phenomena that pose critical sustainability challenges, two of which are climate change and crime and violence. Consequently, responsive and relevant ESE is needed to address these issues through knowledge enhancement, attitudinal change, skills development and behaviour change. As we seek solutions, this text brings together various empirical and theoretical contributions focused primarily on the English-speaking Caribbean region, that explore a number of areas such as ESE pedagogy, teacher education, values education and progress evaluation. This volume will be a key resource for educators, policymakers, scholars and advanced students of ESE, as well as those interested in protecting our planet. It was originally published as a special issue of Environmental Education Research.

Book Description
Leaders in English Language Arts Education Research contains autobiographical essays by leading English Language Arts scholars throughout the world. In this volume, English Language Arts is presented as a complex and porous discipline—intersecting with writing, literacy studies, multicultural/multilingual education, digital and multimodal literacies, critical and social justice pedagogies, teacher education, linguistics and second language learning, and, not least of all, subject English, including teaching literature and drama. Contributors are retired or current professors in the following countries: Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, South Africa, and the United States. ELA scholars often begin their careers as K-12 teachers and then become teacher-educators at universities; due to this, they work at the intersection of theory and practice throughout their careers. Therefore, this volume will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate English Language Arts Education students as well as to in-service English practitioners. This volume will also appeal to ELA researchers at all levels since it contains first-hand, personal narratives of well-established ELA researchers as they reflect on their own development as scholars.
