Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of a two-day symposium held in Amsterdam (18 and 19 April 1991). There are 26 scientific papers divided into three parts. Part One presents the results of a ten-year study carried out by the multi-disciplinary WQL working group (Water Quality research Loosdrecht lakes) on the Loosdrecht lakes. The central theme of the studies was the quantitative phosphorus flux in the various compartments of the ecosystem (including the food chain), paying special attention to supplementary measures to combat eutrophication. Several papers portray the state of the different aquatic environments, pertaining especially to ecological assessment of their water quality, complex hydrology, and interactions at the sediment-water interface, as well as between phytoplankton, detritus, zooplankton and fish. An overview of the food chain in the Loosdrecht lakes is given, in the light of relationships between the physical-chemical environment on the one hand and between the phytoplankton and zooplankton on the other, using multivariate analysis. The vast amount of data collected on the structural and functional aspects of the ecosystem enabled a mathematical eutrophication model, with which to simulate additional measures. The logistics employed and the infrastructure developed by the WQL facilitated ground-truth verification of the remote sensing studies. The research studies and conclusions derived from them were critically analyzed from the points of view of the national eutrophication policy and the regional water authority. A list of WQL publications, the last chapter in Part One, is preceded by a brief synthesis of WQL studies by the editors. Part Two contains more papers with studies carried out on other lake ecosystems. Here the emphasis is a critical analysis of eutrophication. These studies were directed at additional restoration measures, such as flushing, dredging, chemomanipulation and biomanipulation, either in isolation or in combination. In Part Three, the Epilogue, the editors briefly review the causes of water quality deterioration, lake eutrophication and problems of resilience and delay in recovery of these shallow, eutrophic systems in the Netherlands.

Book Description
This work presents the state of the art of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecological restoration projects in The Netherlands. Starting from the conceptual basis of restoration ecology, the successes and failures of hundreds of restoration projects are described. Numerous successful projects are mentioned. In general ecological restoration endeavours greatly benefit from the progressive experience achieved in the course of the years. Failures mainly occur through insufficient application of physical, chemical or ecological principles. Spontaneous colonization by plants and animals, following habitat reconstruction, is preferred. However, sometimes the re-introduction of keystone species (e.g. eelgrass, salmon, beaver) is necessary in case the potential habitats are isolated or fragmented, or if a seed bank is lacking, thus not allowing viable populations to develop. Re-introducing traditional management techniques (e.g. mowing without fertilization, low intensity grazing) is important to rehabilitate the semi-natural and cultural landscapes that are so characteristic for The Netherlands.

Book Description
Shallow lakes differ from deep ones in many aspects of nutrient dynamics, biotic structure and interactions of various trophic levels. Though very common in European lowlands, shallow lakes attract inadequate attention from research teams. This book aims at filling gaps in our knowledge of the processes which take place in non-stratified lakes. It contains proceedings from the international conference `Shallow Lakes *95' held in Mikolajki, Poland, on 20-26 August 1995. In more than 50 original papers up-to-date views on eutrophication, degradation and recovery of shallow lakes are presented. The first four sections of the book (Nutrient fluxes, Biotic structure, Trophic interactions and Whole lake studies) deal with theoretical aspects of lake functioning while the fifth (Biomanipulation, restoration and management) is devoted to practical measures undertaken to improve water quality in shallow lakes. The book is therefore addressed to university biologists and ecologists and PhD students, as well as to managers involved in restoration of shallow lakes.

Book Description
This volume comprises the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held at Dalfsen, The Netherlands, in June 2005. The theme of the symposium was Shallow Lakes in a Changing World, and it dealt with water-quality issues, such as changes in lake limnology, especially those driven by eutrophication and pollution, increased nutrient loading and productivity, perennial blooms of cyanobacteria and loss of biodiversity.

Book Description
Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Description
The production of food and energy interfere with the natural nitrogen cycle of the earth. Many of these changes are beneficial, while others are detrimental to societies and the environment. The changing nature of nitrogen in the global environment crosses scientific disciplines, geographical boundaries and political divisions and challenges the creative minds of natural and social scientists, economists, engineers, business leaders and planners. The papers in this book give readers a panoramic view of the changing nature of reactive nitrogen in the global environment, enabling them to make better choices about nitrogen management in food production and consumption, energy production and use, and environmental protection.
