Book Description
This Springer Brief introduces wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the need for resilient WSN operations in application domains. It presents traditional approaches of providing resilient operation of WSNs to ensure continuity of data delivery even when some network sensors fail. The pros and cons of each these approaches are discussed. Also included is an overview of network coding basics, and motivate the use of network coding-based protection in order to combine the advantages, but avoid the disadvantages of the traditional approaches. The authors cover the design and analysis of a centralized approach to network coding-based protection of WSNs. The coverage also includes practical and realistic network situations, and the coding strategies employed. Next discussed is how to recover from data losses using a distributed approach, which is more practical for large scale WSNs. Algorithms for scheduling of transmissions while implementing network coding-based in the two cases of using digital network coding, and analog network coding are covered. Resilient Wireless Sensor Networks includes a concise, but an in-depth coverage of the use of network coding to implement agile and resource efficient protection in WSNs. It will be of interest to professionals and researchers working in the areas of fault tolerance, network coding, and deployment of WSNs in harsh environment. Advanced-level students in electrical engineering and computer science will also find this research valuable as a reference.

Book Description
The main goal of this project is to establish a fundamental analytical and design framework for highly resilient wireless and sensor networks based on the study of the qualitative and quantitative properties of the largest connected component. Building on our recent promising results in the field of percolation, we propose to design network structures and algorithms to greatly enhance the resilience of high-performance wireless and sensor networks within challenging and dynamic environments. This proposed effort involves further enhancing our understanding of percolation processes and phase transition in networks with general spatial node distributions, multiple transmission power levels, and channel fading. It also involves analysis of network resilience to correlated and cascading node failures, investigating resilience in mobile networks, and developing distributed control algorithms to achieve network resilience using limited communication overhead. Major accomplishments over the period covered by the grant fall into three general areas: 1) improvement of the analytical characterization of the critical threshold for general random geometric graphs with heterogeneous transmission power levels and channel fading, 2) new analysis of the resilience to correlated and cascading node failures in wireless networks, and 3) new analysis of percolation processes in mobile wireless networks, and characterization of the latency for information dissemination in mobile wireless networks.

Book Description
We are rapidly heading towards a world in which the computing infrastructure will contain billions of devices, which will interact with other computing/communications devices that are carried or worn by users as they go through their daily routines. Such devices will provide data access to mobile users as they move within buildings, cities, or across the globe. This new infrastructure presents tremendous challenges for data management technology, including: huge scale; variable and intermittent connectivity; location and context-aware applications; bandwidth, power, and devi- size limitations; and multimedia data delivery across hybrid networks and systems. Traditional data management technologies such as query processing, transaction management, workflow, business process management, and metadata management must all be reevaluated in this emerging environment. Furthermore, nontraditional issues such as the semantics of mobile data, location-dependent querying, broadcast and multicast delivery, and caching/prefetching techniques must all be addressed. The ability to track people as they move about their daily tasks raises serious issues of security and privacy. This conference is the fourth in the Mobile Data Management series, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for the management of data in mobile, pervasive, and wearable computing. MDM 2000 and 2001 were in Hong Kong and MDM 2002 was in Singapore. Eighty-seven papers were submitted to the conference from 23 countries and were subject to a rigorous review procedure. Every paper had three or four independent reviews. Twenty-one full papers and 15 short papers from both academia and industry were selected for publication in this volume of proceedings.

Book Description
This book features various, ultra low energy, variability resilient SRAM circuit design techniques for wireless sensor network applications. Conventional SRAM design targets area efficiency and high performance at the increased cost of energy consumption, making it unsuitable for computation-intensive sensor node applications. This book, therefore, guides the reader through different techniques at the circuit level for reducing energy consumption and increasing the variability resilience. It includes a detailed review of the most efficient circuit design techniques and trade-offs, introduces new memory architecture techniques, sense amplifier circuits and voltage optimization methods for reducing the impact of variability for the advanced technology nodes.

Book Description
The resilience of wireless sensor networks is investigated. A key concept is that scale-free network principles can be adapted to artificially create resilient wireless sensor networks. As scale-free networks are known to be resilient to errors but vulnerable to attack, a strategy using cold-start diversity is proposed to reduce the vulnerability to attacks. The IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and ZigBee protocols are investigated for their ability to form resilient clusters. Our investigation reveals there exists deficiencies in these protocols and the possibility of self-directed and attack-directed denial-of-service is significant. Through insights gained, techniques are recommended to augment the protocols, increasing their resilience without major changes to the standard itself. Since both topological and protocol resilience properties are investigated, our results reveal important insights. Simulation of the physical and media access control layers using ns-2 is carried out to validate key concepts and approach.

Book Description
Sensor nodes are low-cost and low-power devices that are prone to node compromises, communication failures and malfunctioning of sensing hardware. As a result, some nodes may report outlying data values, introducing significant deviations in the aggregated sensor readings. This thesis presents a practical resilient outlier detection technique to filter out the influence of the outlying data reported by faulty or compromised nodes. The proposed outlier detection algorithm is based on event localization using minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimation combined with threshold-based consistency checking to detect outliers. Data aggregation is one of the key techniques commonly used to develop lightweight communication protocols applicable to wireless sensor networks. The proposed approach handles localization of multiple events by grouping the sensor readings into spatially correlated clusters and performing an event-centric detection of outliers. In the entire process of data aggregation, the outlier detection technique fits as a preprocessing stage for reducing the effect of outliers on the aggregated result. Suitable extensions to the basic outlier detection algorithm are proposed to effectively apply the algorithm to both centralized and decentralized sensor network architectures. This thesis further includes studies that test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, including the detection rate, the false positive rate, degree of damage and the resilience to malicious readings introduced by the attackers. The experimental results show that on average the proposed approach detects as high as 80-90% of the outliers while resulting in 5-15% false positive rate when the network consists of 40-45% outliers. The experiments also show that the extent of damage on the aggregated result is below 50% due to the elimination of outliers before aggregation. Finally, the resilient data aggregation process requires modest computational and memory requirements with zero commu.
