The work described in a previous report has been extended to cover the effect of target diameter and backing material on penetration and energy absorption using a selection of the materials studied previously. The influence of change of target diameter is related to a simple theoretical treatment of penetration mechanics. The theoretical and experimental results confirm the importance of the shape of the stress-strain curve. Yielding materials give a high localized deformation with poor strain propagation and energy absorption, while locking materials give good strain propagation and energy absorption. A review of the work carried out under the current as well as previous contracts is presented and related to the history of research in the topic area to include a comparison of theoretical approaches and suggested direction for future research.
