Eleven Miscellaneous Papers on Animal Parasites (Classic Reprint)
Author: Charles Wardell Stiles
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781332123926
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
Excerpt from Eleven Miscellaneous Papers on Animal Parasites Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith, and to recommend for publication as Bulletin No. 35 of this Bureau, the manuscripts of eleven miscellaneous articles on animal parasites. Three of the parasites mentioned are Asiatic and are likely to be found affecting some of the troops who have served in China or the Philippines. These three parasites are not familiar to American physicians in general, since they are not usually described in American text-books. One of the other parasites is the common vinegar eel, which is now reported as a parasite of man, and two parasites are discussed which are more or less problematic, but have been mentioned in many zoological and medical writings. While the work of this Bureau is primarily in the field of veterinary medicine, it is impossible entirely to avoid references to diseases which affect man. This is particularly the case with the animal parasites. Not only is it impossible to draw a sharp line between the parasites of man and those of the domesticated and wild animals, since the organisms in question are in many cases transmissible from one to the other, but as this is the only service in the Government which supports a laboratory devoted to a study of medical and veterinary zoology, we are constantly being called upon by the physicians of the country, the State boards of health, and the various departments of the Government for information or cooperation in this field of science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Parasitism and Disease (Classic Reprint)
Author: Theobald Smith
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365301639
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
Excerpt from Parasitism and Disease To give a course of lectures on disease to a mixed audience would have been an impossibility, let us say, fifty years ago, partly because there was little or nothing to say. Today, owing to the fact that disease has become a biological problem, that it is ranging itself among natural phenomena in our minds, that it can be interpreted in terms of natural law, and that it can be discussed objectively, it is no longer in the hands of professional mystics. That we are dealing with a highly complex unit, the living animal, in which every organ stands in some relation to every other organ or tissue makes a certain amount of repetition inevitable. It has, however, the redeeming quality of driving home the best established facts in the host-parasite conflict. It is unfortunate that technical terms cannot be avoided and that they cannot be translated into common language without great loss of time and interruptions to the normal flow of ideas. Even the actual truth must now and then be strained to simplify the presentation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
