This book presents comparisons of recent accounts in the formalization of natural language (dynamic logics and formal semantics) with informal conceptions of interaction (dialogue, natural logic and attribution of rationality) that have been developed in both psychology and epistemology. There are four parts which explore: historical and systematic studies; the formalization of context in epistemology; the formalization of reasoning in interactive contexts in psychology; the formalization of pathological conversations. Part one discusses the Erlangen School, which proposed a logical analysis of science as well as an operational reconstruction of psychological concepts. These first chapters provide epistemological and psychological insights into a conceptual reassessment of rational reconstruction from a pragmatic point of view. The second focus is on formal epistemology, where there has recently been a vigorous contribution from experts in epistemic and doxatic logics and an attempt to account for a more realistic, cognitively plausible conception of knowledge. The third part of this book examines the meeting point between logic and the human and social sciences and the fourth part focuses on research at the intersection between linguistics and psychology. Internationally renowned scholars have contributed to this volume, building on the findings and themes relevant to an interdisciplinary scientific project called DiaRaFor (“Dialogue, Rationality, Formalisms”) which was hosted by the MSH Lorraine (Lorraine Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities) from 2007 to 2011.

Ce livre est consacré à deux théories majeures pour les études sémantiques contemporaines : la Théorie des représentations du discours, et la Théorie des quantificateurs généralisés. La Théorie des représentations du discours introduit en sémantique une perspective dynamique sur l'interprétation, et étend le domaine de la sémantique formelle au discours. Depuis le travail fondateur de Hans Kamp en 1981, le point de vue et le langage de représentation de cette théorie sont largement utilisés en linguistique. La Théorie des quantificateurs généralisés (Barwise et Cooper, 1981 ; Keenan et Stavi, 1986) offre à l'analyse linguistique un concept de quantification beaucoup plus puissant et flexible que celui de la logique du premier ordre. Le premier objectif de cet ouvrage est de donner une introduction à ces deux théories. On a cherché à rendre cette introduction accessible aux non spécialistes, et à l'illustrer au moyen d'exemples empruntés au français. La seconde partie du livre traite de la contribution de ces travaux à l'analyse de données complexes du français dans le domaine de la détermination nominale et de l'anaphore. This volume explores the interpretation of indefinites and the constraints on their distribution by paying particular attention to key issues in the interface between syntax and semantics: the relation between the semantic properties of indefinite determiners and the denotation of indefinite DPs, their scope, and their behaviour in generic and conditional sentences. Examples come from French, other Romance languages and English. Central to the proposed analyses is a distinction between two types of entities, individualized entities and amounts. Weak indefinites are analyzed as existential generalized quantifiers over amounts and strong indefinites as either Skolem terms or generalized quantifiers over individualized entities.
